Proposition

A method of play used to stimulate extra action in a poker game. For instance, giving a bonus for starting a table in online play (often double points), or in a live game having other players make bets which are not necessarily related to the outcome of the hand.

One example of proposition play can be seen on GSN's High Stakes Poker TV show. During the opening episodes of season 4, the players agreed to pay a winner of a hand an extra $500 each, if he won with 7-2.
