English Community Round-up

Welcome to the news round-up for the English Community. Each week, we will keep you in touch with some of the most important threads within the forum together with some of the fun posts, so that you never need to miss them.

Our Community round-up is your weekly source for all that happens inside the PokerStrategy forums. If you missed something last week and you still want to be in touch with our community, here are some of the most important posts. This is just one of many community-related projects being set up.

Poker Blog of the week
We have another great blog of the week this week, namely JuiceQuadre's:

Living +EV. JuiceQuadre vs himself. (NL10 BSS FR)

One of the great things about this blog is that it is being kept real with no major cash targets as such, so no unnecessary added pressure, instead the author is just trying to live a +ve EV life.
They have incorporated some great ongoing learning targets to ensure continued discipline and also realise the importance of not playing a session when tired or not fully focused.

A great start to the blog and one we will all be following with interest. Keep up the good work. +ve for the win.
sample hand of the week
Thought this was a good sample hand to show this week. It can often be good to limp/complete with suited connectors, but Judge burek2000 reminds us to keep focus on what we are looking to achieve when doing this.

Hand converted with online PokerStrategy.com hand converter:

whateverdude: "I had only ~10 hands of both MP2 and CO, both are 50/0 vpip/pfr fish ".

Judge burek2000: "When you call suited broadways/connectors preflop you call to hit 2-pair+ or a very strong draw. When you only hit TP you are easily dominated with this hands and the safest line is to check/fold, if you have any reads/stats you can also go broke against loose opponents, but against unknowns I prefer to fold as you can get money in on NL25 in much better spots."

Nice hand whateverdude, first of many you post we hope. There are many members that will have found this hand useful, myself included, many thanks.

Our community amassed winnings of.... you might want to sit down for this bit.... $ 103,137.68 this week.  Wow, just wow, well played everyone.

Congratulations to all our winners/other performances, which included:

Sorry I cannot name everyone each week, but I'll try to pick up a selection of different people each time. Keep posting those wins in this thread.

It is now very close to the end of the 'year' after TribunCaesar first set up this $1,000,000 challenge for us. We have until the 10th of August to achieve this target or get as close as possible to it, we are currently on a total of $591,036.48.
  spotlight on
Spotlight this week on community member themagpiespg, interviewed by EagleStar88.

PokerStrategy: Hi themagpiespg welcome and thanks for agreeing to an interview for the community. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

themagpiespg: Thanks for asking me. I'm Steve, 44 and from Bradford, I'm a bit of an introvert and work in telesales.

PokerStrategy: Is there a story behind the nickname, does it have any special meaning?

themagpiespg: Yes it a nickname my mum gave me when I was about 7 and just thought I'd use it for my poker name.

PokerStrategy: Ah nice. How long have you been playing poker?

themagpiespg: I've been play for about 4 years (when I started I thought this looks easy) but found otherwise.
I used to watch late night poker and thought it looked like a lot of fun and a chance to win some cash you know like the pro's do lol. So I opened my first poker account online and started to play, what a fish I must have been, but I enjoy the game so I continued to play.

PokerStrategy: How would you describe your poker style?

themagpiespg: Hard to say as it depends on the table but probable T.A.G. most of the time but can play as L.A.G. if the table is very tight.

PokerStrategy: Adapting is good. Which variants are you currently playing and at what levels?

themagpiespg: At the moment I'm playing mainly NL20 BSS & NL50 SSS , $5/$10 MTT Hold'em and some $5 SnG PL Omaha But am proficient in 5 card draw and 7 card stud.

PokerStrategy: Wow, an allrounder, great stuff. Do you ever play any live events, or are you mainly online based?

themagpiespg: No I've never been in a live event yet but I do intend to do so in the future.

PokerStrategy: If you had to have a theme tune to enter a poker tournament to (like boxers when they enter the ring), what would it be?

themagpiespg: It would have to be Born to be Wild by Steppanwolf.

PokerStrategy: Cool. Who are your favourite poker pro's and why?

themagpiespg: Jennifer Harman because she looks so harmless yet she's a shark. Phil Ivey as his ability to read other player is phenomenal.

PokerStrategy: What has been your biggest success/achievement in poker so far?

themagpiespg: I Think this is my biggest success so far $12,500 Guaranteed R/A 2009-06-07 21:10:43 placed 3 $5+$0.50 won $1,383.20.

PokerStrategy: Wow nice finish, many congrats. If you had the opportunity of playing a final table with a selection of people of your choice (doesn't have to necessarily be poker players, anyone past or present), who would be seated there with you?

themagpiespg: 9 fish :-) But if I where to pick the final table Then 1st Philip K Dick, 2nd Robert Heinlein 3rd Galaio 4th Isaac Newton 5th Charles Babbage 6th Captain Hornblower. 7th Marillyn Monroe 9th Buzz Aldrin 10th Jennifer Tilly (tried to resist).

PokerStrategy: Nice selection, not entirely sure I know them all, I'll have to do some googling. :) What do you like most about PokerStrategy?

themagpiespg: The strategy articles as I think they’re useful and informative and a must read 3 or 4 times. But everything about the site is superb.

PokerStrategy: What advice would you give to our newer members just starting out in poker for the first time?

themagpiespg: Well read all the articles you can before you start at the tables and pay special attention to the articles on BRM as this will save your poker career. That's it.

PokerStrategy: Do you have a favourite blog that you are currently following?

themagpiespg: Poker Brothers II: That's it, we're going PRO!! and I've been following purplefizz's Blog as well, but I do read others too just can't remember all there names off hand, but the 2 above do stand out.

PokerStrategy: Ah yes, great choices, a big shout out to the Brazilian brothers - caltabiano & dandycal and to purplefizz too.
Talking of which, are there any other members you'd like to give a shout out to?

themagpiespg: First all the staff as you all do a great job, AussieIan Hang in there mate, Hi TheBu11d0g & thanks EagleStar88.

PokerStrategy: Do you have any hobbies outside of poker?

themagpiespg: I'm a big fan of F1 and have followed it since Jackie Stuart won the world championship, Reading SiFi and fantasy novels, walking the dog she love walkie time:)

PokerStrategy: If money was no object, what would you buy?

themagpiespg: A very large cabin cruiser like the ones you see in Monti Carlo. :)

PokerStrategy: Cool. Similarly, if you were able to have 3x wishes (Harry Potter style), what would you ask for?

themagpiespg:
1. A cash table full of fish every day;
2. An Mtt full of fish every day;
3. The ability to read their every tell and be able to see all their false tells as well.

PokerStrategy: lol Liking your thinking there. Well thank you for doing this interview , you've given us all a great insight into the person behind the nickname and we're very grateful for you taking the time out to talk to us today. We wish you continued success with your poker and look forward to seeing you in the forum and on the green felt soon.

themagpiespg: It was a pleasure
