bauerbyter has been involved in the Bad Beat Jackpot (BBJ) on PartyPoker four times already. Twice, he took it home himself. Now he talks about the thrill, the nature of luck and the variance in "full ring games with nine Australians".

The interview was lead by funmaker

PokerStrategy: We are also having this interview because you have already been involved four times in the Bad Beat Jackpot at PartyPoker within the last year and a half. You said yourself that it is slowly becoming spooky, correct?

bauerbyter: Actually, I have always had a lot of luck in my life, however what happened throughout the last month surprises even me. That I won a 4:1 result bet against St. Pauli (Editor's Note: German football club) shortly beforehand already implied that more had to come.

PokerStrategy: Overall, you have won about $122,000 with the BBJ's. What do you do with all this money? Did you already treat yourself to anything nice, put any aside?

bauerbyter: Currently, I am perfectly happy, and I haven't bought anything bigger yet. I hope that I will have just as much luck in the assets and investments, and that the money will work well for me.

PokerStrategy: How does the size of your bank account also change your character?

bauerbyter: Nicki Jedlicka once said in an interview that you cannot deny that money changes one's character. However, in my opinion this is only the case when the difference to the previous situation is extreme. In TV shows like Cribs, all the St. Tropez reports and so on, you often realize quickly that the people are rather lacking on the social side. For me, it wasn't a zero-to-one-hundred situation, so I hopefully still have the same character.

PokerStrategy: There are also a lot of people who envy your success. Do you have a few nice words for them?

bauerbyter: In poker, you will always be faced with the whole range of enviousness and jealousy. It doesn't matter if it is due to the BBJ or to other poker winnings, there's no difference. The reason is that most people don't understand that the system of 'going to work for 8 hours a day every day' has become obsolete long ago. The fear of failing forces them into work. In the evening, they return home, curse the world and whine about their job, instead of investing this time to break out of their loop and succeed in something themselves.

In my opinion, in no other country is this jealousy more pronounced than it is in Germany. That was also the reason I refused an interview recently after my third win. : ) In the USA however, you can show when you have achieved something, and you will be respected for it. Here, it is quickly said: "There is something odd here", and people gloat when one of the "Big ones" comes down.

PokerStrategy: Were you also asked for small donations after the winnings?

bauerbyter: There is one guy who asks for tournament stakes more frequently. :P Apart from him, no.

PokerStrategy: Your luck in the game also seems to continue in your private life. You already said that you are perfectly happy. What do you need to be happy?

bauerbyter: The only thing I need to be completely happy is to finally finish my studies, which is something I keep on procrastinating about forever. Apart from that, it is important to be at peace with yourself to be "happy". I enjoy going to the zoo, feeding animals, doing a lot of sports, and I am always friendly; then luck almost comes on its own. Naturally, you also have to work a bit for it. John Milton once said: "Luck is the residue of design".

PokerStrategy: With what do you occupy yourself in your free time?

bauerbyter: Basketball, fitness studio, movies and music. The usual stuff. Apart from that, I literally devour a lot of books about animals. Animals fascinate me as they still have this kind of "honesty" and don't play-act. I also enjoy dealing with shares. The similarities to poker are incredible. The current situation can be easily compared with a full ring match with nine Australians. The variance is pretty much the same. :P

PokerStrategy: What are your private- and work-related plans for the future?

bauerbyter: Besides preparing for my final exams, I am currently still working on a book - not about poker. I hope that I will be able to finish this project by the end of the year.

PokerStrategy: About your game: You play NL 25 up to 1k, and PLO 25 up to 400. What's up with these jumps in the limits?

bauerbyter: There was a time in which I consistently grounded myself up the limits. However, during a longer downswing I then noticed how much this situation wore me out. Sleep disorder et cetera - the whole gamut. To revive the fun in poker once more, I enjoy playing on at least twelve tables at the same time on smaller limits, as I feel much more comfortable there. However, after some time, I then need this thrill on the higher limits again, and that's when I move back up.

PokerStrategy: What are the most important attributes a winning player has to have?

bauerbyter: Most important are probably ambition and the ability to deal well with failures. You should also be able to master a large variety of game styles, as this is the only way to react perfectly when facing the more diverse opponents.

PokerStrategy: Every poker career has ups and downs. How do you deal with downswings, what's your recipe?

bauerbyter: Actually, I am always able to motivate myself again by reading different poker blogs and about the successes of other players. Apart from that, simply move down the limits until you can't anymore.

PokerStrategy: What do you want to achieve in your poker career? Do you have some concrete goals?

bauerbyter: So far, I have only dealt with the cash game variants. In the future, I want to play more MTT's.

PokerStrategy: In our forum, you are rather reserved when it comes to posting yourself. Are there certain forums which you enjoy reading, and which interest you in particular?

bauerbyter: Actually, I check out the forum several times a day. Mainly, the forums about the affiliated platforms on which I currently play. However, I also browse through many other threads. I especially applaud the delightful posts by Itachi (Editor's note: in the German forum).

PokerStrategy: Are there PokerStrategists who you deal with in particular?

bauerbyter: I am often together in voice chat with people I still know from the old Counterstrike times. Some of them also play via Pokerstrategy. Only recently, I was together with ztrider in the Casino Kiel. Other than that, I met some members on the BlackMember party in Munich as well as on the PartyPoker Party 2007 in Hamburg.

PokerStrategy: By the way: the BlackMember party in Berlin took place last weekend. Were you present and what impressions did you bring home from there?

bauerbyter: Unfortunately, no, as my friend backed out on short notice. However, I will certainly be present at the next one.

PokerStrategy: When you tell somebody about PokerStrategy's poker school, what do you emphasize most of all?

bauerbyter: For me, the coaching videos are most important. The videos by kobeyard85 and Sleyde are worth their weight in gold. However, the fact that the offer is so wide-ranging, makes it quite easy to learn poker. Via the strategy articles, videos, coaching sessions and hand evaluations, almost anybody can pick the variant he or she can learn best. Furthermore, there's very good support.

PokerStrategy: Is there anything else you'd like to add at the end of the interview?

bauerbyter: Number 5 will come.

PokerStrategy: Thank you very much for this extended interview! We wish you good luck in your life and on the tables!
