Ante Up For Africa Charity Tournament: Part 3

The Poker charity boom continues with the 3rd annual Ante up For Africa Celebrity Charity Poker tournament which starts on Thursday July 2nd, the day before the WSOP Main Event.

Held at the famous Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the tournament is an opportunity for the general public to play poker with the mega stars of the game and raise a lot of money for a good cause.

The tournament will feature a fast-paced structure designed to complete the competition within five hours. The event will be broadcast on ESPN as part of the networks World Series programming.

"It is an honour and very exciting to have ESPN turn the cameras on for our event," said Annie Duke (pictured right). "This will make great strides in raising awareness about this ongoing crisis."
The No-Limit Hold'em charity poker tournament has an entry fee of $5,000, generating a six-figure payday although past winners have donated their winnings to the charity.

This year the proceeds will go towards helping the victims of the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. The event is the brainchild of Oscar nominee Don Cheadle and Celebrity Apprentice star and WSOP bracelet winner Annie Duke.

Cheadle is an accomplished poker player and Duke has more than $4 million in tournament winnings. Both are committed to raising both public awareness about the tragedy in Darfur and funds to aid its victims. To date, Ante Up For Africa has raised close to $2 million for the cause. Actor Don Cheadle (pictured left) has been keen to praise the success of the event.

Don Cheadle"I am very pleased that we have raised almost 2 million to date and appreciative of everyone who has participated and donated to help us on our mission of bringing the plight of the refugees of Darfur to the forefront of people's minds".

Nevada Gaming laws prohibit money being given directly from the prize pool to the charity. Accordingly, in the previous events, many of the in the money finishers volunteered to donate half of their winnings to the charity and Ante Up for Africa encourages participants to do the same this year.
