Another Player of the Year race

Epic Poker's ranking system, the Global Poker Index, tracks consistent performance over three years divided into six six-month periods. Now, alongside this, Federated Sports & Gaming have announced a new Global Poker Index Player of the Year Award.

This will track results, based on the same points system as the regular GPI, throughout the calendar year. As you can see from the table below, Jonathan Duhamel has stormed to an early lead after his $1.2 million PCA. Others in the top 10 include Faraz Jaka, Luca Pagano and Aussie Millions champion Oliver Speidel.

"Sports betting requires more skill than poker"

An article on Covers.com caused some debate on poker forums when legendary sports bettor Billy Walters, who has supposedly made eight figures annually from betting sports, stated that it is a more skilful form of gambling than poker.

"I used to be a professional poker player,” Walters said, “and, they’re right, if you’re a good poker player, it’s a game of skill... sports betting is much more of a game of skill than poker. I’m living proof that betting sports is a game of skill. I’ve won 37 years in a row."

Betfair to host charity event for Thor Hansen

Last month, we sadly brought you news that Norwegian poker pro Thor Hansen had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The poker community reacted with shock and sadness, now Betfair Poker will be hosting a charity tournament to benefit the Thor Hansen Fund.

The tournament will be an $11 rebuy with $10 from every buy-in being donated towards the cost of Hansen's medical bills. Betfair will double the money raised up to $2,500. The winner of the event will receive a $1,400 Betfair Poker Live package.

Yesterday we reported on the six-figure swings experienced as Viktor "Isildur1" Blom battled the likes of Ilari Sahamies at the high stakes Omaha tables on PokerStars. Today, Blom hasn't taken a break and has jumped right back into the high stakes action.

Isildur1
Standard swings in the life of Viktor Blom.

He and Sahamies are engaged in a $100/$200 Omaha battle at the time of writing, with "Ilari_FIN" up just over $100,000 in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, Isildur1 has dropped around $150,000 in the same time period.

Meanwhile, Gus Hansen has reported that - after missing a flight or two - he has left the high stakes cash games in Macau.

Daily Signoff

Back then, he was just Viktor Blom, an 18-year-old from Sweden who blew up in the WSOPE Main Event...
