EPT Budapest: William Fry Sprints To The Win

Published on 02 Nov 08 13:53 by meta

Swift action and a rather short final table experience were the characteristics of the final day of the PokerStars European Poker Tour Budapest. Englishman William Fry won the event.

He did so by prevailing in the heads-up over the Romanian Ciprian Hrisca after only about five hours of overall playing time. Starting with about half of his opponent's chip stack, Fry turned the table when he cracked Hrisca's pocket sevens with two pairs, and so took over the lead. Now it was up to him to pick the right spot and bring about the decision. He saw his chance when Hrisca pushed all-in after a re-raise. Fry called with pocket jacks and was clearly ahead against A-6 off-suited. The board didn't change anything, and Fry's bankroll increased by €595,839.

In the following interview, he said that it was his first major tournament altogether. Furthermore, the citizen of Nottingham wants to donate a part of his winnings to charity organisations to "help stave off the hunger in the Third World, and contribute my small share".

For himself and his family, he wants to do a good deed by paying off his mortgage and help out a few close friends. Hats off for so much good-naturedness! In some ways, Fry reminds one of the Robin Hood of Poker, Barry Greenstein, who also donates his tournament winnings to charities.

Maybe we will see Fry more often at an EPT event in the future. The next opportunity already takes place in barely two weeks in any case, when the Tour makes its next stop in Warsaw.
