While Los Angeles witnessed the best director Oscar being awarding to Kathryn Bigelow, Las Vegas was busy presenting its own award - for NBC's National Heads-Up Poker Champion - to another female player at the top of her game.

Annie Duke (pictured right) fought her way through a field of 64 players to land herself first prize of $500,000 and the title of NBC's National Heads-Up Poker Champion of 2010.

Duke is the first female to win the title at NBC's high profile invitational tournament since it started in 2005.

Duke outclasses hall of famers

Duke managed to side-step a number of difficult moments on her road to victory, such as being all in with A-T against Paul Wasicka's pocket aces in their final sixteen match when she nevertheless rivered a straight.  In the final best-of-three match she outlasted seasoned pro Erik Seidel to take overall victory in the three day event.

Among the many top names who did not advance to the later stages of the tournament were Phil Ivey,  Patrik Antonius and Tom "durrrr" Dwan.  While Dwan could not get past Phil Gordon in round one, Antonius also found himself out of luck against Chris Moneymaker.  Ivey, who made it through to the second round, then found his progess blocked by Scotty Nguyen.

NBC will be airing coverage from the Championship from April 18.  For further details, please go to the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship page, here.
