The final hand of the 2012 Aussie Millions Main Event has been dealt, and we have a new star in the world of poker.

Oliver Speidel of Melbourne was the home-town hero when he defeated 658 other players to capture the biggest title in Australian poker, plus a pay day of AUD$1,600,000.

Speidel's day

Right from the start, it was looking like it was going to be Speidel's day, returning to the final table in second place, he quickly snatched the chip lead when he eliminated Yann Dion, holding QdQh to the As8d of Dion.

If it was to be Speidel's day, it certainly was not going to be Bjorn Li's day. Despite coming into the final table as the big chip leader, he was the next to go when his As8d could not hit against the As8d of Mohamad Kowssarie.

Oliver busts everyone else

Speidel was dealing blows again soon after, busting Patrick Healy in 5th and Mohamad Kowssarie in 4th. Not only was the Melbourne local the most active player at the table, he was finding the hands when his table-mates were playing back at him.

He soon dispatched his third opponent in a row, this time a short stacked Mile Krstansoski, whom found himself calling the shove of Spiedel with As8d and losing out to the As8d of the eventual winner, when he flopped a nine, which was enough to set up heads-up play.

Aces seal it for the champ

You know it has been your day when you are heads-up facing an all-in bet and you are holding pocket aces, and that is exactly how the tournament ended for Oliver Speidel. Runner-up Kenneth Wong had made a good start in the final battle, but his momentum was quickly crushed when he found pocket nines against Speidel's rockets. No help by the river, and Speidel was the new champ.

One to watch in 2012

His name may be new to most of us, but Oliver Speidel is clearly a player to keep an eye on. The young Melbourne local has been knocking on the door of a big result for a while now. This time last year he won over AUD$100,000 in an Aussie Millions side event, at the end of 2011 he won the inaugural Manny Pacquiao World Poker Event in Manilla for $50,405, and earlier this month he came 2nd and 6th respectively in two Aussie Millions side events.

Clearly his seven-figure score today is his biggest result to date, but it may not be his last.
