WSOP Event #13: 20 Players Entering Day 3

Day 2 of the $2,500 No Limit Hold'em event featured a true roller coaster ride for Phil Ivey. His chips swinged back and forth until the very end of the day.

WSOP Event 13The remaining 175 players returned for Day 2 of the $2,500 No Limit Hold'em event. One of the least comfortable tables to be seated at was naturally Phil Ivey's. Plain and simple, he is running hot. Ivey set things straight from the beginning of the day.

He raised pre-flop, Kristina Holst called and with both of them holding stacks of about 75,000 chips, the action moved to the flop. The board produced TsQhQc, Ivey fired 4,500 and Holst thought for a while before making the call. The turn came Qs and Ivey bet 8,000 this time. After 30 seconds in the tank, Holst decided to let it go. With this pot won, Ivey had around 80,000 chips while Holst was down to about 70,000 - with the average chips being 53,000.

Berj Kacherian figured he could succeed where Holst couldn't, but things don't always go according to the plan. On the flop of Ts9s8d, Kacherian checked, Ivey bet 10,000 and Kacherian called. The turn came Ah. Kacherian checked again, Ivey pushed all-in and Kacherian called, turning over As2s and Ivey showed 7h6d for a flopped straight. The river came 7c and Kacherian was out while Ivey rose to 120,000 in chips.
betting with air, for real
WSOP Event 13As players hit the rail one after another, the time came for the bubble burst. However, the battle for survival was not the most interesting thing at the tables. At one of the tables, a player limped in middle position, Carter King also limped from the button, the small blind folded and then the big blind did something rather unusual, though not before the flop.

The flop came 5c5h7d and it checked around to King who bet 3,100. The player in the big blind then slowly slid out three stacks of yellow chips for a check-raise to 15,000. The dealer politely slid them back to the player, explaining, "You don't have a hand." Apparently, the player had accidentally mucked his hand rather than checking pre-flop.

The rest of the table had a good laugh at this, wondering if he could've got others to fold without cards. The other player folded and King won a quite unique hand. Meanwhile, Phil Ivey lost two consecutive hands which crippled him down to 40,000.

The bubble was finally reached with two players getting eliminated on the same hand which meant Beth Shak was the actual bubble - she hit the rail in 119th place. The 117th place was split between Brandon Schaefer and Christian Dillon for which they earned $2,464.50 each.
roller coaster day for ivey
Phil IveyPhil Ivey (pictured right) started the day well, then he lost two pots which sent him back to square one. As the play progressed, Ivey was slowly making a comeback. His first important victory on the road to recovery featured a flop of JdTs7d.

A short-stacked player moved all-in, two opponents checked and Ivey fired 10,000. The first player thought for a while, asked Ivey if he had jack-ten and then he finally decided to fold. The second player did the same and Ivey turned over 4d4c. The short-stacked player showed 8-2. The turn brought 3c and the river came Qd to send the pot safely to Ivey which got him up to 85,000.

Ivey's stack got a major boost from another encounter later on. A player raised to 20,000, Ivey re-raised to 60,000, the original raiser put Ivey all-in and Ivey made the call. Ivey showed As9d and his opponent turned over pocket kings. Thanks to a rivered ace, Ivey doubled up to 290,000 which moved him up close to the top on the leaderboard.

Just as the day was coming to an end, Ivey lost almost his entire stack. Brett Switzer raised from middle position, Ivey moved all-in from the big blind AsTc with  and Switzer called with AcKc. The board came 8c5c2s3hKs and Switzer doubled up to 430,000 while Ivey was cut down to just 33,000.

The play came to an end with Motoyuki Mabuchi being the last player to hit the rail for the day. He was eliminated in 21st place for which he earned $14,413. Here are the top 10 stacks entering Day 3 of Event #13:
