WSOP Event #28: Joe Simmons Leads The Pack Into Day 3

The $1,500 No Limit Hold'em has lost the vast majority of its original field of 2,638 players and only 27 of them will return for Day 3. Ivan Demidov and many more top pros couldn't make it through the day.

Day 2 of the $1,500 No Limit Hold'em saw 327 players of the original 2,638 returning to the tables. While some players had their eyes set on the bracelet and the title, others were more than pleased with the idea of getting in the money and for that, they needed to reach the top 270.

Whichever place Ivan Demidov was aiming for, it certainly didn't look like he was going to reach it, as he started the day pretty badly. He opened with a raise to 3,000, Thomas Fuller pushed all-in and Demidov called, turning over As3s. Fuller showed TdTs and the flop was a complete disaster for those pocket tens, as it revealed 2hAd5d. The turn brought 8c and it looked like Demidov was going to bust Fuller, but then the river came Th and Fuller doubled up, while Demidov was crippled to just 13,000 in chips.

Even though he lost most of his stack, Demidov managed to get in the money, as he was busted shortly after the bubble boy was determined. In his last hand, he held TdTs and found himself up against pocket kings, pocket sixes and pocket queens. The board came 7dKhJcJh9s and Champie Douglas took down the pot with his pocket kings which got him up to 160,000 in chips.

Douglas continued with his killing spree shortly after, though this time he busted only two opponents. Douglas held AdKs and called two players' all-in, one had AcTd and the other AsJd. The board came 3h8dAh5h3d and Douglas moved up to 200,000 in chips.

Mehdi Alaei was also doing well, building up his stack throughout the day. He first tangled up with Jonathan Evans and won with pocket queens against A-9. By taking down this pot, his stack went up to 160,000 and Evans was left with 10,000.

Alaei's second big hand saw his Ad6d going up against an opponent's AsKh. All the chips went in on the flop and the final board read Kd9d5sJd7h to give Alaei the flush and boost his stack up to 215,000.

At the end of the day, only 27 players were left in the field, with Joe Simmons in a somewhat secure chip lead before they enter the last play day. Here are the top 10 chip stacks after Day 2:
