What is a First Deposit Bonus?
Poker rooms attract new players by offering them an additional amount of bonus money for signing up and making a first deposit.
Here at PokerStrategy.com, we use the massive size of our community to make sure you get the best first deposit offers at the poker rooms where your money is safe.
How does this bonus work?
Each poker room has a cashier section which tells you how much money you have in your main account. You can deposit and withdraw money in and out of this account.
When you make a first deposit, the poker room adds a separate bonus account (also in the cashier section) with your bonus money in it. As you play, this bonus money is released step by step into your main account.
The bonus amount is usually a percentage of the deposit (e.g. 100% of your deposit) and most times, there is an upper limit (e.g. 100% up to $500) – take a look at how this works in the examples below:
Example 1: A poker room offers a 100% up to $500 bonus
"100%" - this means that you’ll receive a bonus amount equal to your first deposit. e.g. deposit $100 and get another $100 extra as bonus money.
"Up to $500" - this means that the bonus amount will not exceed $500. If you deposit $600 you’ll still receive a maximum bonus amount of $500.
Example 2: A poker room offers a 200% up to $500 bonus
"200% up to $500" - this means that if you deposit $100, you'll receive a $200 bonus (a total of $300 for youraccount balance). The maximum bonus amount in this case would be $500.
But don’t let yourself be blinded by big numbers – the rate in which you unlock the bonus is also important. There is a big difference whether you need to play 100 or 1,000 hands to unlock the same share of your bonus. Each of our poker room reviews has an FAQ that provides you with all details about the bonus.
Is the bonus free?
On most poker rooms you receive your bonus step-by-step the more you play. These steps are different depending on which poker room you play on.
In some poker rooms you are eligible to play with your bonus amount as soon as you receive it, but you cannot cash it out until you have played a certain amount of poker hands.
We explain the bonus conditions details of every poker room in our poker room reviews.
If you have any questions about specific poker room bonuses, don’t hesitate to ask it on our poker room forums – our moderators and other members will be happy to help you.
