Can I play way ahead/way behind despite of the drawy board and if not should I raise to protect or simply fold on the flop?

raise would put you quite difficult situation, since he would also b/c with flushdraws and if turn is blank would you really want to b/c turn your KK
So if you check I think c/c down is fine. you can fold to that river card, since I doubt he is barreling just with pure air also I think it is fine to c-bet flop 1$ and then c/f or c/c turn consider his bet size. This way you don´t put yourself at difficult situation by just c/c
