playing live

I'll have a chance to play live at the local card room in about a month's time, and have some basic questions.

The game will likely be $1/$2 NL or $2/$4 limit.

I'm wondering what kind of stop loss to set for myself. In my online cash play it's usually 2 BI per table and 3 BI per session, but if playing live I'll just be playing one table at a time. I don't know whether to set the stop loss at 2 BI or just change tables should I lose 2 BI at the first table. I also have a vague feeling that anything less than about 5 BI would be too conservative for live play.

Also, what time frames are recommended for someone who has never played live before? I'm thinking I'll play about four hours with 10-minute breaks once an hour. If things are going well I might extend that to six or eight hours with a half-hour break in the middle.

      Any comments?

Sounds like you're going into this with the right type of mindframe. GL.

This u cant really say in advance how much time u will be able to play.

Especially if u never played live. It can be very tireing. And depending on the players how good they are.

Generally 1/1 or 1/2 is easer to play in live because theres always some casino fish. But a lot of other factor comes inbetween: how is the place, how is your overall healt (like if u ate something heavy you might get sleepy), or if u cant stand the smoke but ppl are smoking, plus any kind of verbal challange can happen at the table with what others may try to tilt you. U should be able to close these things out. And a very typical mistake what first live players make: your body tells everything about you. If u put the chips in unsure they will know you are some online wannabe who wants to crush live game. Or just if you got into some marginal spot...But if you are luck than all these things wont happen and you will be able to play more. GL

Plus, depending on what time of the day you play, for sure you wont get 8 hours full ring table running. People come and go, and i think most of the time on a longer run you usually dont play fr. If the place offers tournaments, it worth to go and play cash when the tournament has a breake, or running late enough to have guys felt out, who want to win so they start to play cash.

Thank you all for the input.

I face an interesting choice. There are two poker rooms, equidistant from me but in opposite directions from where I am right now. One offers 1/2 NL while the other one offers only limit games, starting at 2/5. I would probably choose the former but I've heard rumors that that cardroom is closing at the end of the calendar year. I don't want to get used to going there regularly and playing NL and then have the place pulled out from under me. Also, the NL cardroom is open only from noon to 6 am while the other one is open 24/7.

      Any thoughts?

Or you wake up in the morning and you have plenty of time till noon to wake up properly, exercise, eat whatever else you do to wake your brain up

Theres no point going somewhere you dont wanna go to play summat you dont really wanna play is there?

Good thinking. And once that cardroom permanently shuts down, I can look for a different cardroom that offers low-limits NL. (There's one about two miles away from it that offers 2/5 NL, but might offer lower limits.)

Generally speaking, if you prefer playing NL, then play NL. Super soft games generally live. Play ABC and don't have fancy play syndrome. Bet Bet Bet for value.

In terms of a stoploss, if you'd normally have a 3BI stoploss, this is more than sufficient. Of course if you lose 2BIs getting coolered, feel free to reload, but if you're getting owned (not that likely!) and lose 2BIs then call it a night ;)

Also, you might find that when cardroom A shuts down, cardroom B will offer the same low limit NL games as long as there is decent demand for them. At this point, maybe you'll get a lot of FL players switching, or dabbling in, NL, which can only be +EV for you! :D

i'd advise against playing 2$/4$ limit. it'll be tough to beat the rake (possibly impossible) and of course very very high variance as someone'll be seeing a showdown every single hand
