hey guys, i was just wondering how many of you play live poker, and where (casino or home games)?
do you prefer live or online? why?
i used to play at a bar (illegal) with people from my town, and we were playing something like SnG but only the winner would take the money. it was 2.5e buy-in. we played sometimes full table, sometimes 4, sometimes 6 players. we were playing almost every night. we had 2 or 3 "dealers". they were just dealing because they would get money, ofcourse they are not professionals but they were doing fine :D . i learned from there some poker tells, but i am just a beginner, its really hard for me to catch a tell but im trying... can you say something more about the tells? which tell you recognize instantly or something...
      little story of me
i went to casino first time 10 days ago or so. there was a tournament "freeroll" but the buy in was 1e+2.5e (rebuy). i didnt want a rebuy, i just paid 1e. i was on waiting list. there are 6 tables in casino, and 74 people registered. so i was waiting for 15 men to loose. i was waiting for like half an hour. starting blinds where 25/50, and when i joined it was 100/200 (every 15 mins blinds are up) i joined on a table with 2k, 10bbs. i doubled up pretty quickly (3rd hand i think). went all in on flush draw, got one caller and hit it on the river. i played really solid poker, folded really much pre-flop, some c-bet wins, catched some cards and little luck. i went on final table (10 men). only first 3 get prizes. 1st 110e, 2nd 80e and 3rd 40e. i had some really good timings and i finished in first 2, we split first two prizes. it was my first tournament and i finished in the top. i felt kinda good, but i made some mistakes. i dont know if anyone tried to bluff me but i didnt catch a single bluff, i played agressevly but when someone took agression on me i just folded.
i really wanted someone to hear/read my accomplishment :D (my friends dont play poker, they smoke weed xD )
but the point of this thread is you to talk about live poker. how was your first experience in live poker and how do you catch the tells.
e.g. at the final table i min. raised pre-flop in early position (utg+2 i think) with AQ of hearts... i know it was a mistake to min. raise but average stack was about 15bbs (i had about 20-23)so it was all-in or fold pre-flop. everyone folded to bb. he called. the flop came 4 4 5 rainbow(no hearts) and i checked, he cheked too, the turn came 9 of hearts, i checked again and he went all-in, it was like 60% of the pot and like 30% of my stack. i was really thinking if he was trying to get that pot or he hit a nine, i was starring at him and he was really nervous, he was spinning his mobile and he was tapping with his legs, his whole body was moving. after some time i decide to call and he turned 8 5 of diamond, the river didnt save me. at that time final table was full (10men).
i think its enough from me, as i said, i want you to write
i dont really type this much, so i hope you will read :D
      and sorry for rusted english

      Hi Kochke,

I'll move this to beginners questions where it may get a proper response. :)

      Best regards,

      Mal.

Have been playing same sort of somewhat illegal bar sng games as well. With 5€ buyin it has been just as entertainment. I have not really studied any kind of "standard" tells though, but just study the way opponents play during games. Have to admit that my study is more on technical level of opponents game, kind of live hud :D

In that AQs hand small raise is normal play. If villain only had 60% of pot behind you should have just shoved flop. End result would have been likely same, but villain has unlikely hit that flop and no point to give free cards with so shallow effective stacks.

      Hey kochke,

Online poker for me is great when I'm chillin at home but off line poker for me is definitely a better all round experience.

I play in cash tables in the casino and usually there is a 10 seat tournament taking place weekly in the local bar. However, not had much chance to get there recently! :(

As for tells, I have quite a few and as long as we never play each other I don't mind sharing a few! :D The best one for me is interest in the hand. For example, if a player has called just to see the flop or blind then most of the time they will concentrate on what's taking place in the hand. A weak hand and they will either start to talk to someone or turn around to take a drink with no interest in the hand. Of course, this is from playing people each week and I have developed an understanding of these players.

Another good tell is when there is a flush draw for example. 3 hearts on the table and the player starts to look at their cards then there is a good chance they're checking what suit that "red" card is they're holding ;)

Just a few of my thoughts and things that work for me anyway.

Are you going to play in the casino again?

      Best,
      Darren

I've only played in a casino once but a ton of times with my friends/family etc i think i love live poker so much more just for the atmosphere and the buzz and the seeing peoples faces when you crush them :D

I love online too but once you get a taste for live nothing beats it imo

I've learnt a few things from Crime programs, wether they are true or not, i don't really know lol.

For instance, Ask someone a question, If they are thinking of a lie, they will look left (their left), if they are thinking of the truth, they look right.

As stupid as it sound, test it on yourself :P

The bets tell is wen someone is shaking during a hand = So nervous about winning a bit pot! & in the smaller tourneys you see it often ;)

      Hi Kochke

Where did/do you play? Is the name German? The reason I ask is that I used to play in alot of casinos/poker clubs across NW Germany/Holland.

Well played on binking in your first tourney, but I think you are right to try and analyse the tourney rather than basking in glory. I think you've touched on a few things here.

      1. Playing live is VERY different to online. Alot of the players just do not understand the concepts as online players do. Casino regs tend to either be Nitty or out and out gamblers. 3 and 4 betting is definitely an alien concept to most!

      2. Freerolls and low buy ins attract large amounts of players that do not know what they are doing. If they don't know what they're doing then their body language is going to give off all kinds of false signals. Unless you know you are up against a decent player (past history, bet sizing etc) then I would just switch the radar off.

      3. I've found in low buy ins that its just best to play solid ABC poker. Nothing fancy. Then just hope you run good.

Well, let me share my first experience with live poker.

I went with a friend, and seeing we don't have any casinos with poker in my home town, I drove with my friend to a touristic city about 150km away. I've never even seen proper live poker before in real life, so I was impressed by how luxury the casino and everything was. As soon as we saw 10 players at the table, throwing the chips around, we started shaking and contemplating whether we should just drive back home, because we didn't even know how to start playing and the guys looked like they're gonna take all our money away in just a few hands.

After standing beside the table for about an hour, we finally sat down. I managed to find out how everything goes pretty quickly. The only thing bugging me was an extremely large amount of straddling going on.

Anyways, we each bought in with €60 on NL200. We expected smaller blinds, but NL200 were the lowest, and seeing we just drove 150km, we decided to take a shot anyways. €60 was quite a lot for us at the time, by the way. Me, being a stupid donk, lost everything in just a few hands, after chasing a flush. So, I just sat beside my friend then, looked at his cards each round and supported him. He won €210 in just about 1 hour, after playing extremely tight. So I drove back home, depressed, whilst my friend was almost crying because of joy. Not to mention this all took place from 1AM - 6AM.

      That's my story.

Did you feel a little stupid doing it? :P

Amazing how it works though! Now just trying to figure out the best way to use this at the table ;)

Tunatic, your story is near identical to my first Casino experience, apart from the long trip, mine was only 1 Hour 30 Minutes, was literally shaking in my boots sitting down with my first stack, and when I got dealt AA, i near fainted lol

I find that the Live Tourneys is more ABC poker, not alot of people get complicated & when they do, they get caught because the fish calls with his 2nd pair :D

Live > Online for sure though!
