      The story so far

In 6 weeks time I’m going to be celebrating my 37th birthday. That’s not unusual. Most people celebrate their birthday. Most people will celebrate birthdays but I’ve not really felt like celebrating them in the last few years. My first marriage wasn’t particularly happy towards the end so I didn’t celebrate. Two years ago I was working in a job I hated, for a boss that if I found him on fire in the car park I wouldn’t waste the piss on, working with people I didn’t like on the wrong end of a long commute.

On January 4th 2011, I walked into work, handed in my resignation and walked back out the door, never to return. :f_cool:

5 hours later, I had found another job. It had worse pay, nicer people, better benefits, was a temporary contract and a better commute. I started to drag myself out of my depression and refused to give anyone not worthy the control over my happiness ever again.

6 months later, I was offered another job. A 75% pay rise was nice. The team I work in are great, the commute is short. However, it’s not what I want any more. I don’t want to be tied to an office. I want to work to my own hours and have the control over my life that is given up when you sign a contract for work.

I’m a cost accountant, a father of two young sons and happily married to my second wife. She’s awesome and is actively encouraging and supporting me seeking the joy in life. I’m happier than I’ve ever been and enthused about our plans for a life less ordinary. :f_cool:

      Discovering poker

I’d played Zynga poker on Facebook and discovered PS. I put my $50 into Full Tilt and played occasionally until FT became a black hole and my $52 (see, I was a winning player!) disappeared over the event horizon. Fortunately PS offered me another $50 At Party. Well, it would be rude to say no!

Sadly, my lack of talent and cockiness got the better of me and I managed to turn it into $35. I’d also been busy with a wedding (some people never learn. [insert appropriate smiley here] ), moving house and then renovating it. I then discovered that the $50 bonus timed out so I was left with $5. With that I tilted and spewed it all over the NL2 tables like a well shaken bottle of Dr Pepper.

So, third time lucky. A rival site offered me $25 on Poker770 with another $25 if I get 500 points. This time I was prepared. I’ve brushed up on the BSS, starting hand charts, articles and videos. I’ve started the Beginners course and started posting hands in the analysis forums.

I’ve started multi tabling and I’m playing 4 tables at the moment (and find it easier to restrain myself from being too loose with more going on). I’m trying to play 4 times per week in the evenings and I’ve managed the massive total of 1,600 hands so far this month. With 4 tables, I’m now pulling in 200 to 250 hands per hour so I’m aiming to get to 2,500 this month and keep on increasing the volume from there.

I’m playing very aggressive bankroll strategy at the moment. I was planning to deposit when I got the offer from Poker770 so I’m happy to pump more cash in if needed. I’ve been playing on $0.02/$0.04 from when I had $26. I’m currently at $50 bankroll and buying in with the maximum of $5 per table. When I clear my bonus, I’ll look at moving to a site that is tracked by PS.

      Poker aims

This blog is called 1,000 days to pro as my aim is to jack my job in and play full time before I turn 40. It’s currently 1,139 days to go but “a thousand days to pro” sounds better. :f_p:
So, I suppose some targets are called for:

      For the remainder of April
      [ ]Play 2,500 hands
[ ]Complete part 3 of the beginners course
[ ]Post interesting hands for analysis from each session.

TL : DR - I’m an old fart who wants to play poker for a living.

Last night was encouraging. A win rate of 93.59bb/100. Perfectly sustainable all the way to NL200. :s_biggrin: I also managed to play 347 hands before the siren call of bed became irresistible.

Last nights play raised my bankroll up to $63 from $25 at the beginning of the month which is satisfying. I'll post up my girraffe after the end of the month.

Meanwhile, a couple of hands from last night. The first shows how far I have to go.

Yeah, probably should have folded the flop. :f_mad:

However, this threeway more than makes up for it:

      Just over cocky.

I also ran into slow played trip Jacks that cracked my queens so I ended the session about 90BB down.

      April review
I'll call it a good start. I aim to learn from each session and try to figure out what I'm doing wrong. At the moment, it's a bit like shooting fish in a barrel.

      So, my targets. Not great.

[ ]Play 2,500 hands - Only 2,428. Close but no cigar
[ ]Complete part 3 of the beginners course - Work decided to put a webfilter up on PS so it's been harder to find the time to watch the videos. But still a fail.
[x]Post interesting hands for analysis from each session. Woot! one out of three!
      :f_cool:

so, I believe a girraffe is in order.

Overall, I'm reasonably happy with how that month went. It's highlighted a lot of issues, which is the point of playing at low stakes, I guess. I'm still ahead with 35bb/100 and $33.93 up. I'll think about targets for May today and get something up.

Hmm. I think the start to the month can be called "challenging". As I posted in this thread, I've no idea how to play post flop. :f_mad: With this hand I just didn't know how to get the most value from the hand. And it shows.

The other thing I did was think that I needed to go to showdown with this one, no matter what. Do we have a smilie with a head banging on a wall? no? OK, just imagine that for me. Got it? Good.

last night I hit my first stop loss and tilted for the first time. It seemed that every hand I went all in on I was losing. Looking back, it wasn't the case but it's interesting to see how my perception was changed.

I think we can count the month so far as

I also ran the entire session with 6 tables. I managed to get the volume I wanted with 722 hands in 1 hour 19 minutes. There was only a couple of times that I felt under time pressure when I wanted time to think.

In slightly better news, I've now got enough points to release my next $25 from the starting capital which covers the losses so far this month.

      Anyway, May poker goals:

      [ ] play 10,000 hands.
      [ ] finish week 3, 4 and 5 of the beginners course
[ ] post hands for analysis
[ ] review the post flop play strategy lessons

And the song that's my current earworm:

      Stay frosty, folks.

I'm back! Did you miss me? Actually, don't answer that.

The month so far has been pretty good. I've recovered from what if I was feeling generous was running bad (or spewing like a whale, your choice) and I'm now back in profit for the month. $1.10 in the black. :s_cool:

Ive also cleared my bonus with iPoker and got my second $25 so in terms of money, I'm happy. I've also addressed a couple of leaks. I was overvaluing my TPWK. I also need to Cbet less or at least smarter.

This was my favourite hand of the month so far. I almost feel bad for the two villans.

1,095 days to go. Well, May is done and dusted so I guess a review is in order.

      [ ] play 10,000 hands.
      [ ] finish week 3, 4 and 5 of the beginners course
[ ] post hands for analysis
[ ] review the post flop play strategy lessons

      All missed. :P

We'll revise them down for this month. I won 16.19 in the end, for 11.91/100. Of course, I've lost that this month with some slopply play and a few all in bad beats.

      Graph time.

The goals for May were always "aspirational" so I view it as calibration.

This month will be a bit of a grind as I ended yesterday's play 3BI down. Still, I've taken some lessons from it and won't make that mistake again. In fact, if May had a theme, it was "don't overvalue your top pair".

So far, June is either "don't overvalue your monsters" , "watch their bet sizing" or "Learn to beat SSS players".

Still, today is my birthday. I've had a steak the size of my head, some lovely presents and I've processed (emotionally and poker-wise) yesterdays losses.

      Thanks HM.

I'm reviewing the first 1,409 hands from June. It's not pretty.

My current favourite is this one.

Basically, I'm not aggressive enough on the flop and too aggressive on the turn, trying to compensate. :f_mad: Still, the pre flop play is solid. :f_cool:

I completely missread this one and should have folded to the re-raise.

He wasn't on AA as he didn't raise before the flop. I wasn't worried about an ace, either. Of course, I have no idea what he was doing playing with those two cards.

Of course, there's always time for a bad beat.

Well, that was a funny sort of month. I only managed to play 2911 hands. There was a lot going on this month. From birthdays, my wife graduation for her Phd, a brief holiday and the aforementioned wife crashing her car (did I mention she was pregnant?). It all takes up time.

The first half of the month was just shockingly bad. I had to go and have a stern word with myself. I was too aggressive, not folding and valuing my top pairs too highly. I ended up going $28 down. Not good enough.

After that, things picked up. I ended the month $1.10 up. A sound recovery and a graph that looks like a roller coaster.

Here's a couple of hands from the month. I've no idea what villain was thinking in this one:

July is shaping up slightly better. After bonuses, I'm looking at nearly being bankrolled for NL10. I've played one session of 960 hands and I'm aiming for 5,000.

I also need to spend some time on the beginners course. I want that nice green badge for my signature. :f_biggrin:

Today's earworm is a literal version. Enjoy and keep shipping it.

I know, I know. I don't call, I don't write and I sure as hell didn't bring you flowers. However, I'm back now so make the most of it.

It's been an up and down month. I've managed to put in some good volume. 6,512 hands in July and I'm up to 2,657 so far in August.

I've also been spewing like a baby with food poisoning. :f_cry: I was $27 down in July and I'm $16 down this month. The bankroll is sat at $152 so I'm still inside my bankroll management limits. I've made some big improvements in my play at the tail end of July and August wasn't looking too bad until I tilted last night and lost $15 in a session. :f_mad: On the positive side, my stoploss limit kicked in (slightly too late!) and I quit the tables.

It was an interesting experience going on tilt last night. I knew I wasn't playing my A game but couldn't stop. I tried to bully people with marginal hands and it ended as you would expect.

However, I'm still positive. I'm learning. I'm spewing at micros rather than at small stakes.

I'll post some hands tonight and fill in some other details. Stay tuned (but don't hold your breath).

A few other points from the month. I finally managed to be at the tables when the daily $50 freeroll started. 9 places paid and 37 or so players were in. I cashed in 6th place for $2.20. I'm really rather happy with this. It's a small amount of money but I played really well. I was surprised at how little I played. The only hand I went all in on before I went out was in the early stages

Later, this hand surprised me. I'm still unsure if I should have been playing. Villain was 100% Cbetting so I think my flop call was good. When the only player with position on me folded I got position and the two turn checks screamed that they had run out of ideas.

And I busted out with this hand. I went in too hard and should have folded to the re-raise.

I was convinced that I was losing lots of pots with AK all in. The only time I saw it win was when it beat me!

Hold 'em manager shows that it's bollocks. The impact of the big losses means they stay in my mind. over my nearly 18,000 hands, I've won $31.42, nearly 800bb. I guess it's because you notice big losses more than small wins.

Poker has taught me not to trust some of my instincts. :f_confused:
