Switching to "leisure" poker

      I am Nikolay, from Bulgaria.

I've been playing poker for like 8 months(I guess it was October when I begun) but it all became serious after I joined Pokerstrategy in December.
I am happy to say that I have cashed out around 1000$ which is quite an amount for the bulgarian standarts. NL25 is the limit I have been playing in the last month or two.. I could have switched to NL50 easily, but decided to cash out 600-700$ two weeks ago, following the rule that you have to experience at least one downswing at a particular limit before moving up. The REAL downswing anyway didn't come, I guess it's because I'm playing full ring, and I don't really see a reason to switch to shorthanded, even if it is believed to be more profitable - it's just too swingy for my likes.

So.. I have just graduated.. school is over and happily for me, I managed to get a good mark at the pre-exam for the university I'd like to study at(in April). This is cool for the simple reason that instead of studying for university exams the whole June(as most of my acquaintances do, the regular exams are in the middle of July), I have more than enough free time, and I opted for playing poker as my main activity, instead of going to work 10 hours a day for basically the same money. Plus, I will have time for sport, as I have eaten and drunk too much around the graduation celebrations :P

Anyway, this is none of your concern, I'm here to write about poker, not about my life.

To cut the long story short, this summer is going to be a poker summer for me, and as many pokerstrategists claim that reading b-logs is quite interesting, I have decided to contribute to this part of the forums. Because I know that when poker gods aren't with you you're keen on reading about other people's ups and downs, and this makes you feel better for the game as a whole, this applies for me at least. I've had fun reading the other people's b-logs for now, but now I hope that you will enjoy reading my stuff as well.

So my summer mission to make money begins with a bankroll of 780$ at Pacific Poker, and I am clearing their instant 100$ bonus(with Pokerstrategy it would have been 175, and I very much regret that my account could not be re-tracked. I recommend you this bonus, it's real deal for deposits of 500-600$, and the competition at Pacific is softer than anywhere else! And pokerstrategy is really offering the best deal around).
I still play mostly NL25, but take some shots on NL50, too. I want to make it to the 1000$ mark as soon as possible and stick to NL50 FR, and I intent to do some serious bonus hunting - this is the key to boost your bankroll fast, really!

This evening has been quite tough with some major suckouts, and maybe some bad plays, but I guess it was just a mediocre day.
      I played a mixture of NL25 and NL50(1 table, the rest 2-3 were NL25).

What I have noted recently as my major progress as a poker player is that I accept losses a lot calmer than before. A very important issue, as nerves have to be preserved, not only because they may lead to bad plays, but because of your health :) and because my mother doesn't say anymore "are you crazy" :D

      Bankroll: 726$

50 bucks down, hope tommorow is better.
There was a very interesting hand today thad I'd like to post.. but couldn't figure out how to open the notepad file with the handhistory at pacific

      Hello finchy,
Nice to see you running a blog(you may not get many responses, but a lot of people are reading it).
Pacific is a good platform for the bonus hunting, you will clear it in like 3-4 days,as my friends experience shows.Im playing NL30 at mansion but I plan on moving to pacific just to boost my bankroll and to have enough to NL50.
I look forward to reading your blog.
see ya and kysmet on the tables :D

Thanks for the responses :) Tzveti, I am really happy that there's a fellow countrywoman here. Kysmet i na teb :)

I played yesterday for a while, but not very much as I was out for the evening. Today I've already played a 2 hour session, which ended up a little bit in the green.

Pacific Poker truly is a site with numerous fish and with a great instant bonus, but their software really puts my nerves to the test. I can't wait to release the bonus and switch to other network, probably ongame, as contrary to the common opinion, I find their software quite cool.
I really dislike the fact that I can't use Pokertracker with Pacific(actually, I can, but one needs a hand grabber which costs like 60-70$.. no, thanks), and this is the reason I don't post any graphs and stats, otherwise I enjoy browsing through them very much, too.

I hope I will make the tracker work fine with ongame(the network Mansion belongs to) so that I could keep the thread updated in a more intriguing way, because just plain text is a bit boring, I know.

      Bankroll currently at: 740$

Bah.. went very good today but in the last hands i lost most of todays winnings.
QQ cracked by J5 and AA by KJ cost me the most money, but actually I could do nothing, even in the first hand I lost only 2/3 of my stack, so I got out with the minimum. Otherwise I think I played very good poker.

      Hey finchybg,

Nice to see you started a blog! Great that you've been having success and have been able to cash out. It was a nice read and I hope to see updates as the summer develops!

Good luck at the tables :)

      Best regards,

      Soo..

Yesterday's first session was awesome, earning me like 50$ for a short amount of time, and since then I have played breakeven, I guess the reason are some suckouts, but I don't remember some costly mistakes I've made(only one unsuccessfull bluff, but wasn't that expensive). I've always put my money as a favourite, except for hands like this:

I am with AJ, raise, called, flop 2JJ - he's with 12 dollars and I am with 25, no way to get away from it - he showed 22 :)

So I am very happy with my game, and I am waiting for the poker gods to grant me a major upswing, as the one a month before, where I won like 350$+100$ bonus for 10 days on NL25.

It's not a long way to go to clear the pacific poker bonus, this evening I go to a party outside of the town with a sleepover, but tommorow I am back and I think that Saturday and Sunday will be enough to finally clear the bonus and cash out and deposit somewhere else. I will surely move to a platform(probably ongame network because of the easy bonuses) where I can use pokertracker and show you graphs and stuff, and I hope I will make this a better read than it currently is.

I'm such a bonus whore :D Changed 3 sites for the last month, but that's mere 3x100$ added to my bankroll(some of them already in my bank account).

I played several tournaments which have cost me some money - but you can't win everytime. The main thing is that I accomplish one of my further goals, namely to improve my MTT game - I've seen many PS members win decent amount of money just from one MTT, and I am very keen to achieve such a thing as well - so I occasionally play a tourney or two, with <10$ buy-ins, so that they do not hurt my bankroll. Looking forward to the Sunday hundred grand and the second Battle of the Donkeys :)

      Bankroll is at 791$.

I am very close to clearing the bonus at pacific, unfortunately my last hands there are a nightmare. I should have cleared it today, but better to wait for the next day, I am just not in the mood to play now.

Bankroll was above 800$ but currently it is at 732$ which is quite disappointing, as the math shows that my little adventure at pacific has ended -50$ excluding the bonus(otherwise it's +50). With this disastrous competition, it's quite unexpected for me, but as I said before, I am happy with my game, I just get into unavoidable situations or get outdrawn. I play a little bit of NL50 and it doesn't welcome me in a very good manner, hope it's better when I fully concentrate on this limit after I reach the bankroll of 1000$.

Nevermind, later I will suck on out somebody, not only the villains on me :P

I hope I do well in the Sunday Hundred Grand this evening :)

      Bankroll at 732$.

I finally cleared the bonus and will get out of the irritating pacific poker. Math shows that I'm -90$ of playing there, and only +10$ total, counting the bonus.
To be frank I'm a bit cross as just yesterday my bankroll was 100$ larger, but anyway shit happens.

The cashout is now being processed, and will be finalized hopefully by Friday. Then I will move the money to Ongame. Fortunately I didn't deposit my whole bankroll at pacific, and had 220$ left in my moneybookers account. I have already deposited 200$ to the Ongame network and will play NL30 till I reach at least 850-900$ in total and take another shot at NL50.
The remaining 20$ from MB are now in a sportsbook, just to bet a little bit for fun till Euro 2008 is over. Maybe I could win something here and there, after the championships these money(if any left :P ) go back to my poker account.

Btw, Pokertracker is set up, works fine for now and you may expect some stats and graphs in the near future.

Soo, I currently have 218$ at Ongame(tried pokertracker yesterday and won a nice pot), 411$ waiting to be cashed out from pacific, 62$ at Pokerstars(for tournaments) and 20.50$ at the sportsbook.

This makes up a total of 711.5$.

P.S I placed a bet +1 Asian Handicap for Romania at 1.50. GL to Romania, they are not a team to be underestimated.

P.P.S Ongame is the network Mansion belongs to, so we may run into each other with some of you who play NL30

pls don't run me over like everybody today does :)

yesterday I took off almost the whole stack of a fish, fortunately he was deepstacked and I stung him for almost 60 bucks, but since then I've had almost no cards, and whenever I bet/raise, I'm being reraised either pre-flop or post-flop.

I lost many many small pots, for like 3-4-5$ and in total I'm like breakeven.

When they raise my continuation bet for the 10th time, I felt tilt for the first time in quite some time, so decided to write here just to cool off a bit and to try posting a graph:

Pokertracker is working fine on the whole, though I lose some hands, but they are just a small number(that's why I'm up 12$ according to the graph, but actually it should be less) - is this normal?

I hope I am not tedious - but anyway, you read only if you want to :)

Nah, its not normal loosing hands. You use the auto import feature right?
Also, you should take notes. Those reraises on NL30 are often with air/TPTK/etc
Also, dont give much credit to shortstackers...
      What is your screenname anyway?

      Back on track:

Very good streak, everything goes as it should.

Btw, I won a stack with KK against AA, all-in preflop - so I suck out on some people too :P Pity that the guy was from my country but can't help it.

Now that I'm using pokertracker, I review my stats and check back the hands I have lost to see any mistakes. Of course I make them from time to time, but generally I feel I have an edge against the majority of the players.

There are some shortstacks at the tables, but it's very easy to recognize them with PT, the guys with around 6 VPIP - so if they are 1-2 at a table, it's not that bad, as long as you stay away if they show strength. I steal their blind very often, so I'm +$ from them I think :D

For now my stats are like 12/8, but when I make more than 5000-6000 hands, I will post them here and analyze my game - I just need a bigger sample than the 3k hands I've played till now.

Soo, my total bankroll is at.. 861$

I hope I reach 1000$ the following week(of course I don't expect the same progress as today and yesterday) and slowly adapt to the stakes at NL50 FR. I guess it will hurt more when I lose, but I will get used to it.

So.. what I am going to do now is to check the database for players I have played more than 500 hands with and note them down on a sheet of paper with their VPIP/PFR/WSD stats. It is very useful, because I could make some profitable steals from time to time.

Last days have been kind of irritating. I've lost like 3 stacks little by little but shit happens.
And I REALLY get pissed off if they raise/call my conti bet several times in a row. I know they can't pass everytime but I just hate it :)

I must limit the conti bets against 2 opponents if I don't hit, this works sometimes and wins a bigger pot but on the whole I think I lose money doing this.

      Here's the graph:

      And the stats:

Comments on the stats are welcome!

OK, these two days have been outstanding for me.
My total bankroll passed the 1000$ mark and I am going to give NL50 a try.

What do you think, is there a significant difference between NL30 and NL50(respectively NL25 and NL50 on other sites)?
What do I have to expect?
To be honest getting used to the stakes will take some time because 4-5 tabling with 50$ makes up a total of around 200-250$ on the tables - which is a lot of money in my country. I mean, a nurse in a state hospital has been given such a MONTHLY salary for the past years(they rised them up to 320$ though, but it was just weeks ago).

As far as I have read there's a noticeable skill gap between NL50 and NL100, but some people even say that NL50 is easier than NL30. I don't think this is true but I could expect relatively the same skill level - at least I think so.

This evening I will try it out, besides I will win more money from pure playing(5BB/100 is my expected profit), I will release my bonus much faster.

Wish me luck, it's very important that my first steps on this limit are fine - because I would tilt if I lose 2-3 50$ buyins for a short time.

Actually I've played some NL50 on pacific poker but just one table.

OK that's for now - and I wish luck to Russia this evening!

I tried mansion's NL50 just yesterday, the level is higher, but not by much, and you can find the fishes and stack'em fast
