      I tried lower bet sizes postflop to keep him in the hand with lower pairs. Is this a bad idea? Missing value?

      Doesn't really make sense. :P Go for normal sizes, your sizing just induce bluffs and not really thin value. Definitely bigger on the turn and also river, missed a lot value. :P
