      BB: $10 (100 bb) 28/28(18h)
      Hero (UTG): $10 (100 bb)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with J J
Hero raises to $0.30, 4 folds, BB raises to $1, Hero calls $0.70

      Flop: ($2.05) 8 J 4 (2 players)
BB bets $1.17, Hero calls $1.17

      Turn: ($4.39) 8 (2 players)
BB bets $2.51, Hero calls $2.51

      River: ($9.41) A (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $5.32 and is all-in, BB calls $5.32 and is all-in

      $20.05 pot ($0.90 rake)
      Final Board: 8 J 4 8 A
BB showed Q A and lost (-$10 net)
      Hero showed J J and won $19.15 ($9.15 net)

What to do preflop? Villain is fairly active but it's a small sample and I give his raise a bit more respect due to the fact I am opening from UTG. Folding JJ seems too weak, raising will isolate me against better, so I called. Other than playing for set value (I got lucky this time), is it profitable to play passively and e.g. call 2 barrels if no A appears?

      Hello member001,

Nah, calling is totally fine if we also assume the villain is active. Though I wouldn't be 4betting without really good reason, rather Call and play the hand IP. Nice hand!

      Best Regards.

Calling is fine, you get good implied odds there. And by calling the first 2 streets you made sure that he's not folding that weaker hand. River card was perfect, and you were able to get him AI.
