      Hey All,

My name is Travis. I'm 23 years old and I recently graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Mathematics. I now currently living in Toronto where I work as a software developer.

I've been playing poker on an off since about the time I started university but it has mostly been SNG's. Lately though I have started play cash games, specifically I am currently playing NL10 Zoom where I am more or less break even after 16k hands. Currently since my girlfriend is still in school at Waterloo she comes to visit most weekends so I'm not able play much on weekends.

My (very) long term goal for poker is be able to achieve a win rate such that I could make as much money playing poker as I do at my full-time job if I chose to pursue poker as my primary source of income. It is probably important to note that I really enjoy my job and it pays very well (especially for someone just out of school).

      My short term goals are:
[ ] Play 10,000 hands per week - this works out to about 2 hours of playing per day (5 days a week)
[ ] Post 5 hands per day on hand review forum (at least until I become more comfortable with my plays)
[ ] Reach sufficient bankroll to play NL25 by December
[ ] Read all NL BSS strategy articles up to an including Gold

The primary focus of today's session was to be willing to fold top/over pair when an opponent shows aggression so that I don't lose a ton of money against trips.

I think I did a pretty good job of it (with the exception of one hand which I will post). I finished today's session over 8 BIs up :D

The session got off to a great start with this (plus a few other smaller ones)

Poker Stars, $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 9 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

      BTN: $21.94 (219.4 bb)
      SB: $4.94 (49.4 bb)
      BB: $7.27 (72.7 bb)
      UTG+1: $19.22 (192.2 bb)
      Hero (UTG+2): $10 (100 bb)
      MP1: $10 (100 bb)
      MP2: $11.90 (119 bb)
      MP3: $25.96 (259.6 bb)
      CO: $11.35 (113.5 bb)

      Preflop: Hero is UTG+2 with K A
      UTG+1 raises to $0.30, Hero raises to $1.10, MP1 calls $1.10, 6 folds, UTG+1 calls $0.80

      Flop: ($3.45) K K 3 (3 players)
UTG+1 checks, Hero bets $2.17, MP1 raises to $8.90 and is all-in, UTG+1 folds, Hero calls $6.73 and is all-in

      Turn: ($21.25) 4 (2 players, 2 are all-in)
      River: ($21.25) Q (2 players, 2 are all-in)

      Results:
      $21.25 pot ($0.96 rake)
      Final Board: K K 3 4 Q
UTG+1 mucked and lost (-$1.10 net)
      Hero showed K A and won $20.29 ($10.29 net)
      MP1 showed T T and lost (-$10 net)

I think that this is a hand I could have played better:

Poker Stars, $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 9 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

      BTN: $34.27 (342.7 bb)
      SB: $12.87 (128.7 bb)
      BB: $5 (50 bb)
      UTG+1: $8.02 (80.2 bb)
      UTG+2: $10.25 (102.5 bb)
      MP1: $9.29 (92.9 bb)
      Hero (MP2): $10 (100 bb)
      MP3: $6.25 (62.5 bb)
      CO: $29.92 (299.2 bb)

      Preflop: Hero is MP2 with A K
      UTG+1 raises to $0.30, UTG+2 folds, MP1 calls $0.30, Hero calls $0.30, 2 folds, BTN calls $0.30, SB folds, BB calls $0.20

      Flop: ($1.55) K 4 8 (5 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, MP1 checks, Hero bets $1.48, BTN calls $1.48, 3 folds

      Turn: ($4.51) K (2 players)
Hero bets $2.15, BTN calls $2.15

      River: ($8.81) T (2 players)
Hero bets $6.07 and is all-in, BTN calls $6.07

      Results:
      $20.95 pot ($0.94 rake)
      Final Board: K 4 8 K T
      BTN showed 4 4 and won $20.01 ($10.01 net)
Hero showed A K and lost (-$10 net)

I don't see him calling here with anything worse than trips or the flush draw.

Overall though it was a good day and I hope that tomorrow can be just as good.

You appear to be correct. I will change the second hand to the one I meant to post (which was also AK).

A question for anyone who might be reading: What do you feel is the best way to use my FPPs? Keeping in mind that I haven't played a lot of MTTs. Thanks in advance for your replies :)

So you wouldn't suggest using my points to build my bankroll by buying say the Gold level cash reward?

you could... but imo the value you get isn't really too great, in the sense that it won't be a substantial % addition to your bankroll which is reeeaaally going to help you move up faster.

AK hand -> most likely i'd tend to 3bet/fold preflop, as played bet the flop smaller, as it happened don't think i'm ever folding the way the action went.
shipping is fine for value from KQ/KJ and the alternative is c/c vs missed clubs, depends on how we see btn

Not a great day today! I erased yesterdays winning plus a little more. I played 2 nearly 2 hour sessions for a total of 4349 hands.

I got really unlucky in several instances where my opponent hit the river to win the hand and there was one hand where I lost to a set to a higher set.
I was generally happy with my play for the first 3 hours but then I tilted away 3 or 4 buy-ins which I'm not too impressed by.

One of the perks of the company I work at is the we get a paid half day off on the day before the holiday (It's Thanksgiving weekend in Canada) which means that I will get an opportunity to play for a couple hours in the afternoon before heading to my parents house.

Here's one of the more interesting hands of the day where I might have found myself in an awkward situation if it wasn't for the river

Poker Stars, $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 9 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

      Hero (BTN): $10 (100 bb)
      SB: $5.65 (56.5 bb)
      BB: $5 (50 bb)
      UTG+1: $12.72 (127.2 bb)
      UTG+2: $8.10 (81 bb)
      MP1: $24.19 (241.9 bb)
      MP2: $17.01 (170.1 bb)
      MP3: $10.62 (106.2 bb)
      CO: $17.82 (178.2 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with J K
      UTG+1 calls $0.10, 5 folds, Hero raises to $0.40, SB folds, BB calls $0.30, UTG+1 calls $0.30

      Flop: ($1.25) J 3 T (3 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero bets $0.89, BB calls $0.89, UTG+1 calls $0.89

      Turn: ($3.92) Q (3 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero bets $1.87, BB folds, UTG+1 calls $1.87

      River: ($7.66) J (2 players)
      UTG+1 checks, Hero bets $6.84 and is all-in, UTG+1 calls $6.84

      Results:
      $21.34 pot ($0.96 rake)
      Final Board: J 3 T Q J
      Hero showed J K and won $20.38 ($10.38 net)
      UTG+1 showed 8 J and lost (-$10 net)

The Jack on the river made my decision fairly easy (I went all-in because I felt that villain would either fold or call regardless of raise size). I think I probably would have played bet/fold on any river except for an Ace or 9 though maybe X/F would have been better because I have to believe that most of villan's limp/call range is broadway (of which I don't beat any on the turn) and SC which I assume he'd give most up on the flop.

Finished off the week on a good note with a short session today up 2 BI's over 1000 hands.

Unfortunately I don't have time to go into detail but here is my graph for the week (10,250ish hands).

One particularly troubling thing is that I'm a running a lot above EV which means I am making a lot of bad calls and getting lucky. My goal for next week is to work on this a lot and to finish with a positive EV.

Next week is going to be a short week since I won't be getting home until Monday evening and then leaving Thursday night for my company's annual retreat

Way to go! I wish I was running over AIEV. I should post some graphs on my blog...
