      after he checked the flop I doubt it hit him, the turn is a card that probably doesnt hit his range so I raised, after I got check raised I didnt really buy it so called.
      river was somewhat scary for me cuz it might hit his range so I just checked behind trying not to risk getting reraised again.

      Should I have bet for value on river? Or did I have to do it on the flop after he checked with J on the board, or maybe 3 bet on the turn?

      Hello HrabriLavek,

      Bet the flop as he doesn't show interest into the pot. :) Otherwise not much to comment. We can't value-bet the river cause clearly not getting called from worse.
