      Villain, unknown fish 46/42
On the flop I decided to call with the intention to call even to the river if necessary. Unfortunately on the river flush card hits and he bets large. Is a mistake to call in this spot?

If villain is player like this i would like to 3bet preflop. Vs player like that i would then bet flop and play for stack for sure as soon as possible.

As played we have to know that 9x is also his range ad the way he playet i don't think we are ahead often enough on River.

Playing more aggressively preflop and flop we would not have such a hard decision on river.

      +1

Consider his bet sizes I think it is mostly for value and since players would not bluff that often I would prefer folding river.
Also would prefer 3-betting pre-flop and raise/shoving flop

      best regards,
