      BTN: $4.38 - VPIP: 67, PFR: 0, 3B: 0, AF: 1.0, Hands: 3
      SB: $22.30 - VPIP: 30, PFR: 10, 3B: 0, AF: 0.0, Hands: 10
      BB: $4.43 - VPIP: 50, PFR: 25, 3B: 0, AF: 0.0, Hands: 4
      Hero (UTG): $6.82 - VPIP: 20, PFR: 18, 3B: 2, AF: 4.0, Hands: 390
      MP: $7.01 - VPIP: 10, PFR: 0, 3B: 0, AF: 0.0, Hands: 10
      CO: $4.82 - VPIP: 0, PFR: 0, 3B: 0, AF: 0.0, Hands: 3

Pre Flop: ($0.07) Hero is UTG with 4 :club: 4 :diamond:
Hero raises to $0.15, 2 folds, BTN calls $0.15, SB calls $0.13, 1 fold

      Flop: ($0.50) 3 :diamond: 5 :spade: J  (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $0.35, BTN calls $0.35, SB folds

      Turn: ($1.20) 3 :spade: (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.85, Hero folds

F: At the time, I bet hoping to get 55-99 to fold but I think this may have been unrealistic. I know by player is unknown but what stats would I have been looking for to decide if this assumption was true?

I could have bet $0.30 instead of $0.35, saving myself a BB when this fails.

I could bet to prevent myself getting bluffed from weaker hands but I think a lot of ace-high hands may be tempted to float me.

T: I think since I'm getting called with a lot worse than Jx a lot of the time here, I could possibly double barrel getting all those hands to fold (55-TT, Ax).

If I'd have realized that I'd need to double barrel to get most hands to fold, I think I would have just check/folded the flop. I'd rather save my double barrels for hands which could pick up equity on the turn.

I think this sums up the best way of thinking about this hand. Low pocket pairs are usually not going to provide great opportunities to barrel. It's true in this case you have back door straights though (an Ace might give you a great opportunity to barrel.)

In general wait for hands with more pot equity (as well as potential additional turn equity). On this type of board texture your opponents calling range is going to consist primarily of pairs. A hand like AQ has much better equity against 88 than pocket 4s. So despite 44 technically being a stronger hand than AQ in the absolute sense, AQ actually has the most equity vs your opponents potential calling range.
