      Hello!

Im making a postcard and need some witty/intelligent metaphor or quote about Finnish language by someone famous'ish. Any ideas?
the only reasonable one so far is:

Finnish is not a language, it is a way of setting at the end of the bench with your fur cap pulled over your ears.― Paavo Haavikko

Can be in finnish too :)

      Thanks in advance!
      duba

      P.s. There is a finno-ugric day coming on the 20th.. :f_eek:

Just to clarify for Kyyberi and the rest of us, I think dubadal is looking for metaphors about the language itself, not just any winged words :f_smile:

Selventääkseni Kyyberille ja meille muillekin, luulisin että dubadal hakee metaforia itse kielestä eikä vain mitä tahansa lentäviä lauseita :f_smile:

yes, about the language :) thanks for clarifying
      another example (about hungarian though)
ILHELM SCHOTT: In the Hungarian language there is a fresh, childish, natural view and it cannot but be suspected that there is the possibility of development hidden in it like a bud.

I couldn't think of any myself and found only one by google. It's also not by anyone famous but actually by a long dead professor Mikko Korhonen, whose work was about finno-ugric linguistics.

"Roots in the East, sprigs (or leaves) in the West"

There aren't that many (good) quotes about the language.. But there are wonderful quotes made by finnish people worth spreading - most of these come from the legendary ski-jumper Matti Nykänen!

The following remarks have been made by the ever-so-witty mr Nykänen :

      "Life is man's best time."

      "Every chance is an opportunity!"

      "The truth is indeed reality."

"Tomorrow is always in the future."
