Okay PokerStrategy. Fine. You win. I'll start a blog.

Soo... I've been a member here for a few good years and this is my first attempt at blogging about poker. The main reason - the Get Rich Or Die Tryin' Challenge, the second reason is that I hope keeping this blog helps me improve my game.

      About me

Not that any of this matters, but: I'm 22, male, from Estonia. Graduated from university this summer (2014) and now have a bachelor's degree in economics and entrepreneurship. I'm living with my long-time girlfriend and currently serving at replacement service (which is a replacement option to military service), which essentially means I have to work full-time, for a year, for minimum wage.

I started playing poker, like many people here, with the free money offer from PokerStrategy. Started with cash games, more specifically the Short Stack Strategy, played a bit till I hit a minor downswing which robbed me of motivation for a while, plus I felt that SSS was not a sustainable strategy to play with these days. After a while I slowly started getting into fullring BSS and spent some time playing/learning that. Mostly breakeven, but also managed to earn some profit at MPN, at NL2 (really terrible players there). The sample size is very insignificant though, that's for sure. Anyways, even though I enjoyed BSS, especally playing the fish at MPN, I wanted to try something else. And that was the Double or Nothing format. I figured it's the most straightforward variant of SNG-s; has the least variance; and with my beginner's knowledge of SSS, I thought I'd have a slight "edge" in the beginning because I was used to playing very tight. As it turned out, it was not all that simple. Yes, the strategy is rather straightforward but you will face very difficult decisions on the bubble nevertheless. There is not as much strategic information about these games available as there is about regular SNG-s. And variance is still a b*tch. So I started getting more and more into regular fullring SNG-s as well aside from DoN-s and currently, these 2 are the gametypes I play simultaneously. Like I mentioned, I used to play some NL2 BSS as well for from time-to-time but lately I haven't had any time to get into that, I've been focusing solely on SNG-s (and some freerolls, I've always loved them freerolls :f_love: ).

I consider myself more of a beginner (rather than a pro), but from what I have learned since the start of Summer 2014 (when I started with SNG-s), I am not the worst player (thankfully) and the stakes I'm playing should be perfectly beatable in the long run. I've been using a rather aggressive BR management so far as well, which has been both a blessing and a curse, but right now it looks like things are moving in the right direction overall.

I'd also like to share some insight into my long-term goals regarding poker. I have no interest in becoming a pro player (in terms of having to grind for a living). I don't think I will ever be patient enoguh to grind for 6h+ per day and still have a passion for the game (and be a normal human being). Also I wholeheartedly agree with Daniel Colman's views that he expressed after winning the One Drop. So what am I trying to achieve? First and foremost, I want to be a "winning player" over a decent sample. I want to know that I can beat the small stakes and if necessary, I can grind in case I need money (hopefully not necessary). At some point, I'd like to be able to purchase a decent PC or a car (more specifically, the magnificent Alfa Romeo 166) for poker winnings. Also I'd like to become a MTT player in the future, but right now I don't think I have the sufficient skills nor bankroll to become one. Will conquer the SNG-s first ;)

I am mostly playing at PartyPoker and (at the moment) RedKings (OnGame). But I have accounts on several sites and I'm going to list them all with BR's here:

      PartyPoker: $566.11
      RedKings (OnGame): $93.40
      Triobet (MPN): €42.96 = $53.80
      PKR: $4.58
      PokerStars: $0
      Unibet: $0

      Total Starting Bankroll: $717.98
      Goal: $4200

Honestly if I had joined this challenge 1.5 months ago, my BR would have been around $250 or $350 at most and I would have set a more realistic goal of $1K or $2K (not that 4.2K is unrealistic but you see, I got my BR over $500 at PartyPoker for the first time in my life like a week ago), but since I've been "suffering" from a bit of an upswing at Party, I had to set my goals a tad higher. $4.2K is a lot of money to me and to actually reach that would be a day worth remembering...

My Biggest (in my opinion) Achievements in Poker so far:

:diamond: 2nd place in MPN SnG Challenge €0-€4.99 Buy In category in August 2014 (for €100)
:spade: Finished in 75th position in PartyPoker $15k Gtd Super Bounty MTT (+3 bounties) for a total of $144 (ticket bought for PartyPoints) (14 September 2014)
:club: Grinded out a free PokerTracker 4 via the Get-It-Free offer at RedKings (November 2014)
 Finished in 37th position in PartyPoker Pokerfest $30k Gtd Super Bounty MTT (+2 bounties) for a total of $145 (ticket bought for PartyPoints) (2 November2014)
:diamond: Reached a $500 bankroll for the first time in PartyPoker (November 2014)

My hands, evaluated by PokerStrategy coaches:

      $5 FR Turbo - 88 flopped trips
$5 FR Turbo - QJs on CO

Guess this is it for now. Oh... did I mention I really really enjoy good music? :P I'm mostly a hip hop listener but I like lots of different styles and artists. Expect to see some examples of my awesome taste in music in this blog... starting now.

Yesterday was the first day of the challenge and I managed to put in a total of 68 tourneys. They went very well on PartyPoker (+$56.60; which includes 2 x $1.30 increment bonus releases and $3.40 for cashing in the $2K bankroll booster freeroll) and very bad on RedKings (-$37.80). Also 3 €0.50 SNG-s at Triobet, where I got a second place and busted the other two, so slightly negative outcome there as well.

With the current bankroll at RK, I'm going to have to play the $1.20 SNG-s only again. I started mixing in a few $3.30 games from $70 and went on to playing mostly $3.30-s at about $90 BR. Like I said in the first post, I tend to use a rather aggressive BR management (at least until my BR at a specific site is below $200 or $300). The main reason for that is, of course, that I like the idea of being able to build up a decent BR fast when on a heater. Of course, I have no problem going down in the limits when things go sour. Another important reason is the rake. At Party the rake is a tad higher for games under $5, but not that significantly. At RedKings, the $1 SNG-s have $0.20 rake and the $3 SNG-s have $0.30 rake... That's a huge difference. Also bigger buy in games help collect loyalty points faster :P

Reviewed a few hands as well and I am still making some ICM mistakes.

According to ICM Trainer I should call Kx here. Don't even know why I folded. If it was 4-handed it would have made a bit more sense.

ATo+ is a call here with my stack according to the ICM. Plus I've played quite a few games with the BTN and he tends to push really loose when the blinds are high.

Overall I ended up +18.18 for the first day (and incidentally, first week), but it looks like there is much room for improvement. Going to hit the tables now and see what today brings. Wish me luck! :f_grin:

Edit: Aww man, almost forgot to share some good music! :)

A short recap of yesterday's session:

      The Good:

 Managed to put in some alright volume (for a Monday)
 Cleared the last $3.90 of my $13 mission bonus at Party

      The Bad:

      :diamond: Made some bad plays
:diamond: Was dominated most times when I had a hand
:diamond: Lost most of the coinflips

      The Ugly:

:club: Made some misclicks (e.g. the wrong table popped up just as I was about to fold at another table and I called an all in at a DoN in which I probably would have made ITM)
:club: Did not pay enough attention to what was happening at the tables. This has happened before, but yesterday was just crazy. At least 4 times I pushed all in, thinking I was the first one involved only to see that there had been a limp or a minraise before me. I'm not playing too many tables (8), but yesterday's session made me think I should take a few less for a while and see where that brings me. Quality over quantity, nah mean?
:club: Overall, I ended up about $70 down in total

A few hands (going to post them in spoilers so the post would not get too long):

The week kind of flew by me somehow. Wasn't able to commit very much time to playing so volume was low, plus I wasn't running exactly hot which demotivated me a bit as well. During the week I was mostly really tired after work, plus other hobbies took some time and effort and I had some family related errands during the weekend. I wasn't even able to play today, which I feel kinda sad about. Anyway, I'm not that bugged about the volume ATM. I'm more interested in putting more time and effort into reviewing/improving my game... though I still enjoy the playing part the most :) Will do a recap of the week tomorrow, till then: good night and good luck!

Since it is rather difficult to keep track of my total BR movements with many different sites, I decided I should post each week's standings at each site and total bankroll here.

      Previous total BR: $736.16

      # of tourneys: 167
      Current BR at different sites:
      PartyPoker: $503.66
      RedKings (OnGame): $39.60
Triobet (MPN): €42.96 = $53.39 (the bankroll is the same in EUR but due to currency fluctuations it is lower in USD)
      PKR: $4.58
      PokerStars: $0
      Unibet: $0
      Current Total BR: $601.23
      Weekly Change: -$134.93

One thing I discovered last week was that I have been closing tables too fast when I get busted out. I had noticed it earlier that PT4 was missing some of my final hands, but didn't really pay that much attention to it. One day last week I noticed that at least one 2nd place was also not present in PT4, so I decided to finally Google the problem and found out that the hand histories are not saved on the PC if the table is closed prematurely, therefore they will not show in PT4 either.

Just finished a very bad session, I can't even remember the last time I tilted so much. Ofc made some bad plays due to it as well (well to be honest I think the tilting started due to a few bad moves I made and it got worse from there). Another reason could be that I ran out of tobacco like 4-5 hours ago... :f_mad: Don't have anything better to smoke ATM either unfortunately.

Good news is that prior to playing I took some time and did the ICM training a bit, got 92% out of 250 or so hands. I reckon that's pretty good. Another good news is that I will probably get enough PartyPoints to play the 15k GTD Super Bounty tourney this Sunday. I've played it twice so far and both times did pretty well. But they were just warm-up. This time I'm certain I'm gonna ship it! :s_cool:

Won a $5 satellite ticket from a freeroll at Party today, unfortunately busted from the tourney pretty fast... never try to bluff a calling station :f_mad: Also cleared a $10 mission bonus, and I've now been playing the 10k chips bigstack 9man SNG's to try and score my last objective for current mission - to win a 175bb pot in an SNG. Haven't been successful at it so far but I'm sure I'll get it soon. Completing this mission with the normal SNG-s is a bit questionable though.

Anyways games have been a bit kinder to me for the past 2 days, fingers crossed that they'll do the same tomorrow and on Sunday! If all goes well I may actually make some profit this week :f_biggrin: The $15k GTD Super Bounty is 99% certain to go down on Sunday. I have the ticket. I have enough coffee. I have already mentally prepared to go to work on Monday morning without having had any sleep. It will go down.

Been wanting to post some hands here as well but haven't really found the time and then forgotten which ones I wanted to post... but I'll get to it someday, I promise. The plan tomorrow is to get some bit more serious studying done and hopefully play some games as well.

Oh and I'll probably make a November recap as well someday (if I'm not too lazy), even though I've been in the Get Rich or Die Tryin challenge for 2 weeks or so.

      Peace!

Played a bunch of freerolls last night as well ($2k Bankroll Booster @ Party, $500 Shuffle Up @ RedKings, + some smaller ones) but did not make it ITM in any of them.

Overall I guess I'm pleased with the week and the whole November although I could have definitely done better.

      PartyPoker graph for November:

Note that this does not include 3 bounties from my first 15k Gtd on November 2 (+$72.75); does not account for the fact that I got the both of the MTT tickets for "free" (PartyPoints) (+$100) and also cleared a bunch of small bonuses + won a few bucks with the daily scratchcard promo.

RedKings was not that kind to me this month though:

Played at Triobet as well but the volume was rather low so no point in posting the graph. Pretty much breakeven there overall (-$0.91). I was able to score 4 consecutive cashes on Saturday so I hoped to bink some more on Sunday for a good SNG Challenge result (10 best consecutive SNGs count), but I lost every damn coinflip. 94th place and €4 prize money was the end result, which will be added to my BR as soon as it gets credited on my account.

On a sidenote, I have lost my Gold status due to delays with SP from Party. No one from the staff has responed to the thread yet

Alright, this post is long enough, time to get back to work people! Let's make this month a good one

Played some games, ended up in profit but...

Gonna have to review some of that obviously. I made a solid game by my own standards but who knows, maybe something stupid slipped in somewhere. And as said before, I'm no 100% ICM pro (yet?).

One hand as well. It's nice to be on the winning side sometimes when sick beats do occur:

So after PartyPoker suffered from somekind of technical issues yesterday (again!!!) I finally managed to play some today. Yesterday played at RedKings (a few games) and they went well. Today was not that good though, managed to cash in 3/8 tourneys at RedKings and 2/12 tourneys at Party... Not that worried about my game though, just got some coolers and met villains at the top of their ranges. I did post one hand in the hands evaluation forum though (this one) and I decided to add all of my evaluated hands in the first post of the blog as well.

Oh and I decided I'd play at least one $0.1 SNG at PKR each day... Just to participate in those lottery freerolls :f_p: (I'm not proud of it, but the fact is that I've always been a bit of a promotion-wh*re)

And here's a track from one of the best albums of the year (Run the Jewels 2):

GL at the tables, I'm heading to sleep! :f_thumbsup:

Another week has passed, time to see how it went.

      Previous total BR: $704.64

      # of tourneys: 232
      Current BR at different sites:
      PartyPoker: $586.77
      RedKings (OnGame): $70.60
      Triobet (MPN): €42.57 = $52.25
      PKR: $4.98
      PokerStars: $0
      Unibet: $0
      Current Total BR: $714.60
      Weekly Change: +$9.96

The beginning of the week was not that good for me at the tables and I did not play very much either. I stepped my game up on Sunday where I put in the most volume and managed to climb enough to finish the week with a small profit. I also received the €4 SNG Challenge reward from Triobet but unfortunately I managed to lose it with a few sports bets :f_frown: I thought about adding this as the part of my bankroll that I have "withdrawn" from poker as technically I did not lose it playing poker. But I guess it's not an amount that would make much difference in the long run so I'm just going to take my losses and not include it in the bankroll at all. I'm hoping to add some $3.30 normal 10-man games (I'm already playing DoN's when possible but the traffic for DoN's is terrible there) at RedKings soon as I am approaching 800 Player Points in total (which should release a $100 first deposit bonus as well). I haven't used my points for anything else so far either which means I also have about $20 in points at RedKings which I can convert to cash when necessary. I'm not sure what I'm going to do after I clear the bonus though. I'm not that inclined to play at RedKings as the rake is high, there are basically no promotions and the 3-minute levels of Turbo tourneys don't seem to suit me as well as the bigger stacks and 4-minute levels at Party. If Party offered a reload bonus I'd love to take advantage of that but if not, then I'm not sure... I'd like to use the money to grind for either a first deposit or reload bonus and I'd like to earn StrategyPoints for it as well. Not sure which site to choose though. ATM I'm only tracked at Party and PKR (even though I should be tracked at Unibet and PokerStars as well...)

Let's not get ahead of things though. First we have some grinding to do at RedKings :)

I'll end this post with a song to everybody who dislikes Mondays (hope most of you are doing what you love daily though so you don't have a reason to hate Mondays, but the reality is most people need to do stuff they don't really want to do, every week, to pay the bills...)

This week has not been very good results wise either. Haven't done much reviewing in the past few days so I'll try and get some done tomorrow before playing. Not sure how much volume I'll put in tomorrow though, if it goes the same way as it's been going lately then I may call it a day earlier than usually. If it goes better, well, then who knows, I got another $15k GTD Super Bounty ticket fresh from the Points Store so I'd love to put that to good use :f_cool: We'll see about that all tomorrow, stay tuned :f_thumbsup:

Haven't played any games yet, will open up my first games soon though. The main game will be the $15k Super Bounty ofc, but I will surely launch up some SNG-s as well. Reviewed my hand histories for a bit but honestly did not want to mess up my mindstate before the session by looking at previous bad beats and/or mistakes :f_mad: So, will aim for a relaxed session, not too many tables. Will try to concentrate 100%, not tilt and overall play my A-game. It would be nice to end a rather disappointing week with an upswing.

I was going to post another song, but decided I'd go for something trippier this Sunday evening. Enjoy, folks:

A disappointing week once again. Did not manage to cash in the $15k Gtd again either. Well I got one bounty for $24.25 or somehing, so... it's something. Will try and work on my game a tad more this week and hopefully the downswing turns into an upswing. The BR is reaching critical levels at RedKings, so I'm going to have to be sure not to bust my bankroll there. What makes this especially frustrating is that the $1.20 games there are much softer than Party's $5 games...

A few key hands from the $15k Gtd as well. So I managed to play for 4h+ before busting at 170th place with 109 paid. That's poker.

First big hand (where I got my only bounty)

The unfortunate AQ. Now I'm not 100% sure if I played it right but here were my reasons to shove: 1) I was the last to act 2) I had tons of fold equity 3) Villain was a shorter stack than me

This week begun just like the last one: terribly. At Party I managed to get into the green zone finally on Sunday but at RedKings... well I'm very-very close to going broke. Out of my $100 initial deposit I have $5.90 left. On a brighter note, I'm very close to clearing my first deposit bonus ($100) with 781/800 player points. I have until 24th Dec to clear it and probably I won't have much time tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to clear it today. Also I can get $23+ for converting my player points to cash in case I should go broke. Well I have not made perfect plays 100% of the time but it's still frustrating to keep losing money at the lowest stakes. The current situation is probably a combination of: 1) freakin' high rake 2) bad plays 3) bad luck. Well, whatever, I've already made a decision to withdraw my roll from RK after clearing the bonus, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it afterwards though. If Party decides to finally fix their buggy software (MFC application crash, anyone?) and offer a reload bonus or something, then I'll probably deposit it there. Otherwise, I'm probably just going to withdraw it and use it IRL as I'm pretty darn broke ATM. Would love to deposit and start grinding SNG's at some new site but ATM there aren't really any good options IMO. The thing is that I'd like to earn SP's for playing as well. None of the iPoker rooms are available in Estonia and I'm not tracked at Stars, which rules out 90% of sites available here at PokerStrategy. Plus, the local poker rooms (most of which operate in Microgaming like Triobet) are not associated with PS and in addition, I'm not a big fan of the Microgaming software/traffic. I've been thinking about 888 but I've read a lot of mixed opinions regarding that room, so I'm not that convinced. Also I'm pretty sure I signed up to 888Casino some time ago for some promo so I'm not sure I could earn SP's there as well...

Oh, on Thursday and Friday we played a few live games with friends as well, which was a very enjoyable experience. I managed to win the game on Thursday but was the first out of the money in both games on Friday. My own fault though, I was going too aggro to get the blinds. In first game (on Friday), being the chipleader, I shoved my 54s from BTN against two smaller stacks (SB being the shortstack), knowing that if SB folds, the BB should fold 90%+ of his hands as well. Unfortunately, the BB had KK and crippled me. After the short stack also doubled up and I got junk hands for a while, I shoved A3o only to be called by 66 and be eliminated. In the second game I also shoved my 84o pretty randomly (well I was very short, don't remember how many BB) in hopes of getting the blinds, but again I was called and lost to 66.

Not much volume this week, but I managed to finally clear my bonus at RedKings (and withdraw it), which was added as "withdrawn funds" in the list above. Obviously this gave a pretty good boost overall this week. As I deposited $100 and ended up with $131 + PT4 I count this grind a "win" overall, but well it could have been a lot, lot better. Just see my SharkScope...

Yesterday I was on a decent heater at Party which was also nice for a change. I have also thought about it and decided that I'd add $10 Standard SNG-s when my BR hits $1000 there and $20 DoN-s when it hits $1100. I'll add $10 Turbos when I feel like it (with the requirement that BR must be $1k+). I'll drop back down to $5/$10 DoN-s + $5 usual SNG-s when I fall below $800. I want to start with Standards because there seems to be more fish there compared to Turbos (most high vol regs prefer Turbos due to the speed) and I also have a feeling that it is a tad more variance-free (as there is more time in each level there isn't as much pressure to go into push/fold mode).

Won't be playing any more games today and did not play yesterday either - will make my highly anticipated return to poker in 2015

Overall 2014 was a successful one for me in all aspects. I started playing SNG-s seriously in the summer and I feel like I have made tons of progress since, plus the results overall are good as well. I was setting some rather optimistic goals to myself at a few points when on upswings, which did not work out obviously, but I quickly realised that I wanted too much too soon. I'm not sure if I should set any specific goals for 2015 or not... going to have to think about that. Will update soon.

Anyways, I wish all PokerStrategists a pleasant and safe New Year's Eve and a happy + successful 2015!

Here, enjoy an hour of the best Estonian hip hop from 2014:

Going to have to keep this short as it's already getting late and will have to hit the tables soon :)

      Anyway, key points:

:spade: Only made profit this week thanks to awards/bonuses (€2 from MPN SNG Challenge + cleared $20/$100 out of Party bonus, see below)
 Will have to clear $100 Party 12 Days of Xmas mission bonus by 7th February
:diamond: Unsure about the ability to clear the bonus due to other commitments (mainly work + an additional little work that I'm going to have to do on weekends)
:club: But will try to give my best
:spade: Also probably going to make another shot in the $15k GTD Super Bounty next Sunday (if not too tired or anything)
