      Hello fellow poker players,

Where to start? Well I've been a online poker tournament player for many years. I live in sunny South Africa. Life was good, even though I never really made any big cashes. Then disaster struck. All online gambling was outlawed here unless it was operated by a licensed South African casino. It was worse than Black Friday. Suddenly we were no longer welcome or able to play on our favorite sites. So poker faded out of my life for many years.

In the meantime I had a lot of ups and downs in my personal life. The biggest disaster was falling back into drug abuse. You've probably heard people say they have an addictive personality or disorder if you will and many people would discard this as an excuse. Well trust me, those of us who really get addicted to just about anything from love to alcohol to drugs know that being a slave to yourself is the worst nightmare imaginable. Even before I finished high school I was drinking and smoking too much. After school I got into the world of drugs and only managed to escape when I was nearly 30. Nothing as bad as Heroine but what we called "party drugs" like Ecstasy, Acid, Coke, Cat you name it.

So I got clean, got a good job and life was good. I discovered poker and dabbled in it on and off for a few years. Then life took a turn for the worst. I slipped and fell in a shopping mall and broke my femur bone just below my hip. So off I went to hospital and got pumped full of Morphine. Big mistake. After two weeks they had to slowly take me off it as the doctor noticed I had become totally hooked on it.

Then a few months later I met some folks who were into hard drugs and fell off the bus completely. I started using Crystal Meth nearly every single day for nearly a year. Of course it was nobody's fault but my own. I could have said no. I wanted to say no. I didn't. Yeah, when you got a mind that just don't think about the consequences as long as it can get more of that good feelings you're in trouble. It got so bad I hair started to turn orange! I was in hospital a few times unable to breath, thinking I'm having a heart attack.

So I took stock of my life after getting out of hospital the last time and phoned my brother. He's always been my rock in life and during my bad time more so than ever. I came to live with him and got away from the temptation and suppliers. It probably saved my life. It was hell going through the withdraw period and I won't wish it on anyone. I stared that demon in the eye though and I said no more. No more shall I be a slave to my own desires. No more shall I throw away the miracle of life. I shall live demon and you shall die. And the demon looked back at me wearing my own face and vanished.

Fast forward to the current date. I have been clean for 4 years now. I am 43 and there is much to do. I stay far away from pure gambling games like slots or dice because I'll just get hooked on the thrill. I'll probably get hooked on poker but it's a different kind of hook. It's a game of skill and maneuvering. Yes, luck plays a part and it sure is a rush when you out-flop or outdraw your opponent but it's also very analytical. The better part of my mind is all logic and analytical.

Phew, that was a rather lengthy introduction so I'll try to keep the rest short. I recently got a 8 Euro free bankroll on NetBet and quickly turned it into 80 Euro. I didn't consider bankroll management or anything else really I just played a few 0.50 an 1 Euro tourneys for the hell of it and finished 3rd in two of them. So I brushed off an old dream and said, this is the year we're gonna do it. We're going to the WSOP in 2016.

So this is what I need to achieve as a main goal. Turn 80 Euros into 20K Euros. That will cover my entry fee and other expenses for the event. However, I need to break it down into smaller milestones to keep track of my progress. And this is where I'm a bit lost. What realistic milestones should I set for myself? For now I'll stick to 0.50 and 1 Euro tourneys until I get to 300 Euros. Then I'll move up from there. I'll try to keep regular updates but for sure should manage once a week at least.

So if you got any advice for me on how to reach my goal let me know. Am I being too optimistic? I hope not but if I'm gonna shoot I might as well shoot for the moon right?

That's it for now. Feel free to comment and if anyone is battling a drug addiction or have someone close to them fighting the good fight feel free to comment or PM me. The same obviously goes for straight out poker chat.

      Peace.

      Hey HennieP,

Welcome to the 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' bankroll challenge. we will be looking forward to your first update which you should post by Monday of each week in Get Rich or Die Tryin' - The Bankroll Challenge - Reporting thread.

I can certainly identify with a lot of what you posted. Been there and done that several times over. I actually believe I now have a stronger mindset from playing poker and this helps me resist those demons.

I think you have an awesome long term goal and you should just go for it and I wish you the best of luck. Definitely following.

      Have fun :gl:

Big welcome in our blogger community and tx for sharing your story with us.

I'm not familiar with what games are on Netbet, but my advice to avoid big variance is to play Sit&Goes first since they required a lower bankroll and under <$5 buy ins the games are very soft.
Here is a video playlist from our SNG coach Collin Mosham :

Wish you best luck with your goal and don't worry about being optimistic, in order to achieve higher you must think big and dream high ;)

Thank you all for your kind words guys. Teddy NetBet does not have the 45 player SNG's like PokerStars at micro levels, only the 9 player ones. On the other hand their MTT's are not nearly as large as PokerStars either. Most of the time you're up against a field of about 200 players which I find is not so bad.

Running deep in 2 Euro BI tourney at the moment. 26 Players remaining so already made payout (27 places paid). First prize is 200 Euro. Starting field was around 200 players. 2 Euro is not in line with my BRM but it was a 750 Euro guaranteed tourney and I had nothing else to play. Will post results later on.

Edit: I should add that its a 1RB/1AO game. So it cost me 6 Euros. Good thing I made the money. Should really stick to the BR plan.

Thx SDK. 15 players left and I'm still in good shape. Just took down a decent pot with QQ and have around 45BB. Blinds are 1200/2400. Knocked out my opponent.

Finished in 10th position. I really need to work on my very late game. I play either too tight or too loose. Still not a bad result. Played 2 tourneys today and cashed in one which covered the BI for both and a bit of change. BR 83 Euro. Going to bed now. Will get them tomorrow or over the weekend.

Good morning blog. Had to do some work this morning. I'm not a pro (yet) so gotta do the job thing to pay the bills right? Thought a bit about and came up with a plan. NetBet has a lot of guaranteed prize pool tourneys at different buy-ins. I'm only going to play the ones with the biggest prize pools for the lowest buy-in. Why spend 2 Euro on a 500 Euro when I can play the same for 1 Euro. Sure, you get a slightly bigger field but I can handle that. Anything up to 500 players I feel comfortable with. More than that I'm not sure is worth it at micro limits. I'm also going to try and limit myself to freeze-out tourneys although rebuy tourneys are most common on NetBet.

The other thing is turbo tourneys. I don't like them very much because I can't yet handle the pressure of 3 minute levels. Does anyone have some tips on how to play these kind of games? Let me know.

That’s nasty that you didn’t reached the final table. Maybe a good idea to post some hands on the Hand discussions for Tournaments board. Than you get feedback of it how you could play a hand better.

Good monring again blog. I didn't post yesterday as I was angry with myself. I'm down 30 Euros! I just couldn't hit flops and I kept making the wrong calls. There were some exceptions but overall a mixture of playing bad and having bad variance made me go on a spree. I kept getting back onto the felt to try and take down a win. I should have just given up and called it a day but nooooo, it was "just one more" and yeah...

I did come to my senses eventually and went to bed early. There is some better news though in a way. When I did eventually give up on getting anywhere with tournaments I played a few quick twisters (spin & go's). I came to realize I'm either a very lucky or somewhat competent heads-up player because I was all over the place. I could have been on tilt though because I was super aggressive with all-ins on a wide range of hands. My opponents were so scared to get into a hand with me it was funny. Keep in mind thought that it's micro limits so yeah. It did make me feel better though.

So we're on 53 Euro today and we'll see what the day brings. If things don't go well I'm gonna take the day off and just relax. Otherwise I'll hopefully have some good news at the end of the day. ;)

Well, I managed to burn through my bankroll. In hindsight I can see where I went overboard but yeah, at the time it seemed like a good idea. So we're back to rebuilding. I'm not giving up though! I came up with an idea that will hopefully not only improve my bankroll situation but also help contribute to my overall financial wellbeing. I'll post details as soon as I'm done with the preparations. I'll give you a hint though - Think "affiliating". :D

      He Hennie,

we were wondering why you did not report for our BR challenge for this week!
...your previous post makes it clearer!
Don't overspend on your poker Bankroll if you can't afford it - but please update us also for the BR challenge!

btw, don't do any multi-level-marketing stuff, you won't win....
