So during a hand, I find it really useful to ask myself certain questions, to focus my thoughts. I actually keep a table with these at hand when I play. These are questions I have compiled from videos, articles and my own experience, and they seem to really have helped my winrate:

      PREFLOP:
      Do I open-raise?
      • HOW DOES MY HAND FLOP? (Axs, Kxs flop well, but things like T9s need usually the turn and/or river)
      • How do I do MW? (PPs do well, but hands with lots of Reverse Implied Odds (RIO) /are often dominated do poorly)
      • How will I act against a 3BET? (4bet? fold? call?)
      • Limpers? (Passive limpers, aggresive limpers, tight, weak??)
      • Do I have a good position?
      • Do I want people to call, 3bet, fold??

      How do I react to a 3bet?
      • Do I have RIO?
      • Am I squeezing, or did I raise before?
      • Do I have position?
      • What's the Stack / Pot Ratio (S/PR)?
      • Is it MultiWay (MW) or HeadsUp (HU)?
      • What do I want the 3better to do? Do I want him to 5bet, to fold, or to call? (this can change the sizing)
      • Is the 3Bettor passive or aggresive?

PRE-POSTFLOP (To think about when transitioning from PreFlop to Flop)
      • What are the stack sizes? And the S/PR?
      • Am I the raiser? Do I have initiative? Am I getting respect? (a raise from UTG gets more respect tahn from BU, since you're stealing more from BU).
      • Position, position, position.
      • If he called a 3bet, can I remove AA, KK, AK from his range?
      • Am I MW ir HU?

      FLOP
      First to consider:
      • What’s the nuts? Draws? Board Paired?
      • How likely does he hold the nuts? How does his Preflop range overlap with the nuts? (more likely in AJT board than 223 board)
      • How likely that he missed?
      • Is it an ACTION FLOP? (Flop that hits lots of top pair, overpair, strong draws)

      Do I cbet?
      • WILL I BET THE TURN? DOES VILLAIN OFTEN CALL A CBET? IS IT TWO BARRELS OR 0?
      • DO I WANT TO COMMIT? IF HE CALLS, IS HE COMMITED?
      • WHAT CAN I REPRESENT?
      • WHAT IF HE RAISES?
      • IS HE PASSIVE?

This is my list for now, any comment will be greatly appreciated. If anyone has interest in improving the list with their own questions, please answer the thread, maybe we can build something good.

      Hope it was helpful,

      Kerith

      Hey, kerith,
      Good material!

I created a mnemonic to help remember some key points over 3 years ago.

      Pre-Flop
      PHASER
      Position
      Hand
      Action before me
Stats / Stack sizes / Steal
      Ego
      Risk

      Post-Flop
      SHOT
      Strength / Stack-to-Pot / Size of Bet
      Hand
      Odds (includes implied odds)
      Texture
The original was posted in my blog nearly 3 years ago when I was going through "The Mental Game of Poker"

The original post isn't too interesting, but randomly later there are some suggestions for modifying it.

      All the best,

This was before Black Friday even. Wow.
Interestingly, some of the mental game leaks I had then, I do now on purpose. "Know when to fold 'em" has always been a big problem of mine. I've long since stopped hanging on to hands too long, but now I'll float some flops with the idea of taking them away later.

It was interesting to read some of my own posts from 3 years ago.
