I'm trying not to be result oriented here. That's why I'm posting the hand.
I'd categorize MP as TAGish or a weak tight. The others are unknown.

      $0.02 NL - Holdem - 8 players

      BTN: 108.5 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: -, Hands: 1)
      SB: 190.5 BB (VPIP: 42.86, PFR: 14.29, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 7)
      Hero (BB): 100 BB
      UTG: 72 BB
      UTG+1: 80 BB (VPIP: 26.98, PFR: 4.76, 3Bet Preflop: 3.70, Hands: 63)
      MP: 100 BB (VPIP: 25.56, PFR: 11.72, 3Bet Preflop: 3.30, Hands: 806)
      MP+1: 147 BB (VPIP: 16.56, PFR: 10.67, 3Bet Preflop: 7.46, Hands: 954)
      CO: 52 BB (VPIP: 21.21, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 100)

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has 8:club: 8:heart:
With the BU cold calling and the possibility of the UTG+1 continuing in the hand, I thought playing for set value, even OOT, would be a good option.

UTG calls 1 BB, UTG+1 calls 1 BB, MP raises to 5.5 BB, fold, fold, BTN calls 5.5 BB, fold, Hero calls 4.5 BB, UTG calls 4.5 BB, fold

      Flop: (23.5 BB, 4 players) 2:heart: 8:diamond: 6:spade:
A very safe board for top set. I would've check raised, but after the raising of MP, I decided to try to keep UTG in the hand.

Hero checks, UTG bets 2 BB, MP raises to 15.5 BB, fold, Hero calls 15.5 BB, fold

      Turn: (56.5 BB, 2 players) T:heart:
Still reasonable safe board, IMHO. Checking with the intention of raising, after MP had shown strength on the previous streets.

Hero checks, MP bets 28 BB, Hero raises to 79 BB and is all-in, MP calls 51 BB and is all-in

      River: (214.5 BB, 2 players) 6:heart:

      Hero wins 201.5 BB

I think you played the hand well with a set of 88. I don’t think it’s necessary to 3bet the flop, because that looks extreme strong and now you give the UTG player to 3bet shove or call as well.
