      Hi mardibg,
      Disclaimer: I am NOT a coach!

      I say unlucky both times.
      with the :As: :Qd: hand, you were up against 77, so you were just slightly behind and just lost the coin flip.

             Equity     Win     Tie
      MP2    45.47%  45.28%   0.19% { AsQd }
      MP3    54.53%  54.34%   0.19% { 77 }

      With regards to the :9d: :4h: hand. There is an old saying, "Don't go broke in an unraised pot".
      I think that this might be the exception, I like your call, and I would think it would be OK to even bet out on this flop. Villain will still shove over you, and you would still call and still lose.

      I'd love to hear what other, wiser players have to say about these.

      All the best,
      VS

      I’m no coach ether, but in a freeroll both hands are standard how you can play it.

      Cheers,
