Should I assume I am beat here or is it right to call? Also, should I have made a c/bet on the flop knowing that his call most likely represents an Ace?

yeah, they tend to have Ax hands a lot of times.
Luckily pot is small and you don´t have to be good that many times, so imo you can call river bet. And even if you´re behind you get information how he plays Ax hands on drawy boards
