      When I look on this hand now I think I should call river, but his bet looks like he wants me to call, I'm not sure

      I'd probably bet/fold the river, he couldn't call the flop with many draws, and whatever he called on the flop he probably called on the turn because he doesn't believe you for a J. He could also have picked up a J himself after floating with random overcards.

      I'd much rather be the one betting halfpot than have to check/call in that spot. If he has 8x you'll hear from him on the river although it's weird he didn't raise already given his aggression, and if he doesn't he'll call again with whatever trash he clings to. If you end up valuetowning yourself against a better J or something it's not big deal, i think these players make enough light calldowns for you to make a profit there anyway.
