skiping blinds

      Hi!

I play weekly tournaments with friends (7 - 10 people) and there's always a discussion about skiped blinds.

The way I see it, after each hand the dealer button moves a position, to the next player. Therefor "pushing" the SB and BB. When you read poker rules, this is what you'll find. You don't see exceptions such as nobody paying the small blind (following an elimination) or the dealer button not moving forward "because everybody has to pay the BB"... If a player is eliminated, his seat is no longer a position because nobody's there!

      My version:
The dealer button commands play. After each hand it's moved one position forward. Everybody pays the SB and BB. This implies that, following an elimination, there will be hands where a player won't pay the BB (skips to the player ahead of him) because a player before him was eliminated. He will pay the SB and the player before him is the dealer. Between these to players there's an empty seat or an eliminated player, not a position!

This kind of play can be found in Pokerstars, and I remind I'm refering to SnG and tournaments.
On the other hand, on Full Tilt Poker you'll find the other version of play defended by some of my friends.

      Their version:
The BB commands play. "Everyone has to pay it" and it doesn't skip. This implies that there will be hands where the SB won't be paid and/or the dealer button doesn't move to the next player. It will be pushed forward "one position" to the empty seat, where an eliminated player used to be...

To add to my confusion the two onlne poker sites I'm registered in play these different versions. I've also played a live casino satelite tournament and it followed the version I find senseless.

Is the rule not properly explained or explicit? These two versions show a misinterpretation. Which one's right?

I'm starting to feel it's one of those things to discuss before a tournament, such as blinds size and time, prizes, seating, rebuys...

      Help! :f_biggrin: Thanks!

      Hey NickNick83,

Good question. I can understand how you could get confused about this topic. A lot of players that I deal with on a regular basis (I'm a Poker Tournament Director) have trouble with this topic also.

      But, "Their version is correct".
The BB commands play. "Everyone has to pay it" and it doesn't skip. This implies that there will be hands where the SB won't be paid and/or the dealer button doesn't move to the next player. It will be pushed forward "one position" to the empty seat, where an eliminated player used to be...

For example, If BB was knocked out then effectively there would a "dead small blind".
      UTG would now be BB
BB is eliminated so BB cnt move to SB
      SB would move to BU
      etc etc etc.

If there is no-one in the BB seat then the BB automatically goes to the next player cause there always has to be a BB.
and if there is non-one in the BU seat then the BU can either stay in that seat or its just easier to move the BU back a seat. Because the person behind the dead BU has position anyway on all other players.

      Hope this makes sense.

      Regards,

      Kyle.
