have been playing for a while now and was wondering what exactly is the legal status of online poker in India.
of course i know there is 0% chance of being prosecuted but would still like to know.

would love to know more from someone who plays poker professionally from India that actually has to pay taxes on his poker earnings.

I think its little too late but still like to answer your question. It would be great if you can post in the newly launched Indian Community forum.

Now to answer your question : Like in most parts of the world Indian laws are ambiguous when it comes to online gambling and there are several grey areas within the current law structure.

The situation in India is such that there are calls from many sectors for the government to revamp it's outdated and confusing laws on gambling. A lack of clarity has created some strange interpretations of the current laws.

The only clear status is about the casinos in Goa, where a few land based operators offer poker and other casino games. There has been some news about the state of Sikkim trying to regulate online gaming market . It is expected that the granting of these licenses in Sikkim will give the holders the ability to offer the services in the whole of India, but clear updates are still awaited.

All said and done one cannot deny that online poker has already become popular in India and there is no dearth of options to deposit / cashout from any of the popular online poker rooms.
