Typically people always answer that with an equity analysis between AK and pocket pairs. This works under the assumption that you're facing the one while holding the other, which isn't the case in actual play. AK's biggest strength is that it's only behind against two hands: AA and KK. It flips against pairs and is ahead against all other hands (except AK of course). Small pocket pairs aren't really ahead of anything except even smaller pairs and hands like A2, they flip against overcards and are behind against higher pocket pairs. So I'd much rather push with AK. If I really had to get it in, that is, for me AK is mostly a post-flop hand.

With middle pairs it's a different story, it depends much more on stack sizes and opponent's range, but as a general rule I'd still rather ship it with AK as I'm only really behind against KK+.

Yeah, I guess one would rather push with made hands most of the time, but I guess the assumption is that other players pushing/calling range is weaker then AK, in particular a lot of weaker Ax and even Kx. So if you include some of these into your equilator calculation things will begin to go AK's way.
