It's good if you know he will bet big and you can't get information if he has an ace.Take the following scenario: BB bet 0.40 (in 0.57) you call ; BB bet 0.90 (in 1.37) you call ; BB bet 1.70 (in 3.17)/check hero ??? . With this scenario you will lose more if you call him down until the river to see if he got an Ace, so the total money you would spent are 0.40 + 0.90 + ???( if you call any river) = 1.30
If you raise him on flop you spent 1.10 but if he continue you should be aware that he has stronger hand than yours and not go on with any further action no matter of the bet size at all(unless it's something ridiculus). The raise also gives you the opportunity to balance your monster as people will see you don't always raise with sets , straights and so on and will start playing more often your raises with worst hands.

there are flush and straight draws there. he could also have an ace. i would do a re-raise to push off draws. if he calls, ill check behind the turn for pot control and call smallish river bets.

I think he has there often Ax, so instead of raising I would call flop, call turn and then fold to river barrel
If you raise you just building bigger pot often with worse hand
