Why do you play poker?

I'm interested in everyone's motivation behind their hobby. Is it purely financial or is there more to it?

Personally I just want to be good at something, to feel success and a sense of achievement. I've never felt success before and have always been a bit of an underachiever. Obviously the money is important because it makes it all worth it. It's a reward for hard work and means it doesn't feel like you're wasting your time. I also want to be able to buy things I wouldn't normally be able to, it will make life a little easier.

i liked it at the start...mostly because i was able to win since the first time i played it after i learning basic rules on a free website
i read about 20 pages of doyle brunsons first book where he said that he is always aggressive and picks up a lot of dead money with things like draws and stuff

that got stuck in my brain and i was playing very aggressive and i guess thats how i was able to make profits (micros stakes obv)

now i need money but enjoy playing poker much more than a normal job in mcdonalds

but i do other stuff for fun

Well you can definetly make more money from micro stakes then some student job at mcdonalds or w/e and is the reson many players start because of that. And poker is definetly a fun game, just as fun as many other computer games you can choose to waste time on and getting nothing but some type of satisfaction from winning from it. From poker you also get a reward in terms of $$, which in case you do actually get good at it can make you some decent money.

Now that doesn't mean you have to do it for a living, you can also play it as your hobby and a few extra bucks at the end of the month never hurt anybody.

I play poker as an elegant way of self torture. For that and for money.

I play it because I love that feeling of making a massive call and being right. Or folding a monster because you KNOW you're beat. I like the mental stimulation it provides and as OP said, I actually want to be successful at something. Whether that be a financially successful NL50 grinder or a highstakes player, I want to feel like i'm better than the majority of people, I want to be better than most people at everything I do :)

      I play because:
Poker does not require you to be a certain age!
Poker does not require you to have a ceratin look! (expet for the sun glasses at the live tables)
Poker does not require a certain physical body type!
Poker does not require you to be in a certain ethenic group!
Poker does not require you to be very smart!
Poker does not have many requirements!

All you need is some starting cash, deciplined play, good instincts and the will to never quit no matter how many times you lose!

The rest is up to you and how much effort you put into it!

I see poker as one of the few things I can really challenge myself.
Can I learn to play well?
      Can I make money?
Can I become one of the best?
Can become so good that people will know who I am?

How many other things in life do normal people like us really have a shot at being the best?

This is why I play poker!

As some others said - I play because I like being better than majority of people. And of course for money. If not money, poker would be quite boring game :) I would then play some other computer games.

And yet - I like proofing to others that you can actualy win from gambling :)

I love poker because of the intellectual aspect of it, we can go so far down the rabbit hole with theory (and for number crunchers like myself that can be so fun). :s_evil:

You have to be at least 18 to play online, often older to play in a live casino.
Wearing sunglasses at live tables is douchey.
Not being very smart at this game can lose you money - so I guess it kind of requires you to be smart? But I prefer my opponents to be of the not-smart variety :D

      everything else makes sense

I like it because everyone has been brainwashed to beleive that they are better than everyone else and that they can become rich from it including myself, while in reallity we are just wasting our lives.

Money. It's by far the most financially rewarding thing i can do on a 1000 km radius. I'm not totally in love with the game but i like it enough. When i don't... well, see the first sentence.

I play because I'm a full time student/stay at home dad, and don't have time for a real job because of everything else going in my life. I'd like to think poker will eventually offer me the kind of income working in a bar or McDonalds would.

I had (still have, actually) a very low point in my life, where I had to rethink what have I done wrong before and what would Ilike to do in the future...

I wrote down on paper a list of things what would I like to get in my life and how I would like to live it. I also made another list with things that I am good at and what I like doing.

Now all what I have left is to figure out the way I could achieve things in first list by using qualities in second list...

... and I ended with online poker.

So, I turned on the computer and started to look for places to learn poker... and ended up being here.

For me losing is not an option
