Polaris est le nom donné à un groupe d'intelligences artificielles développées à l'Université d'Alberta. De nombreux scientifiques y travaillent en effet d'arrache-pied pour développer des logiciels qui maîtrisent le plus violent des sports assis. L'année dernière à Vancouver, Phil Laak et Ali Eslami avaient infligé un bad beat aux ordinateurs, et par ricochet imposé un camouflet à leurs concepteurs.<\/p>

Contrairement aux machines, les êtres humains - et en particulier les scientifiques - sont rancuniers. Ils se sont remis au travail pour améliorer les capacités de leur bébé dans l'espoir de laver l'affront. En gros, il s'agissait de faire mémoriser à la machine les mains jouées par le joueur humain pour établir à quel type de stratégie l'ordinateur est confronté. Cela permet à l'inteligence artificielle de s'adapter à son adversaire et d'évoluer vers la stratégie optimale au fur et à mesure des mains jouées.<\/p>

Cette impressionnante nouvelle mouture du programme s'appelle en toute logique informatique Polaris 2.0. Et apparemment, ça marche. La machine vient de battre un team de spécialistes du poker au début du mois de juin au casino Rio de Las Vegas à l'occasion de l'ouverture des World Series. Cette fois-ci, l'ordinateur affrontait pas moins de sept membres de Stoxpoker, dont l'ancien collaborateur de PokerStrategy Nick Grudzien.<\/p>

Deux précisions s'imposent. D'une part, on jouait en Limit : les chercheurs de l'Université d'Alberta ne semblent pas encore prêts à affronter les champions humains avec la cadillac du poker où n'importe qui peut soudain envoyer la boîte sur 7-2 dépareillés. Ensuite, le match s'est déroulé selon les règles du duplicate poker<\/a> dont nous avions déjà parlé. Cela signifie que les machines et les êtres humains sont confrontés aux mêmes cartes privatives et à des flops identiques (pas en même temps, mais dans des manches différentes).<\/p>

Les humains affrontaient l'ordinateur par équipe de deux au cours de manches de 500 mains. Lors du premier match, Nick Grudzien et Kyle Hendon n'ont pas pu faire la différence contre la machine, et l'opération se solda par un ex aequo. Puis Rich McRoberts et Victor Acosta engrangèrent un point pour le camp des bipèdes. Malgré l'excellente performance de Marc Newhouse, les pertes de Ijay Palansky  permirent à Polaris de coller au score. Et c'est l'échec de Matt Hawrilenko avec Palansky dans le dernier match qui donna la victoire finale à l'intelligence artificielle.<\/p>

On attend avec impatience un bot qui obtiendrait de tels résultats en No Limit. Mais pour conclure, il faut rendre à César ce qui lui appartient : le Computer Poker Research Group de l'Université d'Alberta n'a pas pour ambition de monter une bankroll ou de décrocher un bracelet. Son objectif est bien plutôt de transposer les résultats de ces recherches à des domaines plus sérieux et plus constructifs. Il ne manquerait plus que les chercheurs universitaires soient payés pour s'amuser avec des cartes...<\/p>\n\n\n\n
