Thomas Austin Preston Jr. est né en 1928 dans l'Arkansas. Mais c'est au Texas qu'il a passé la plus grande partie de sa vie, s'y rendant célèbre comme l'un des plus grands joueurs de tous les temps. Si vous n'avez jamais entendu parler de Thomas Preston, c'est peut-être parce que personne ne l'appelle comme ça. Amarillo Slim tire son remarquable surnom de son physique (il est grand et maigre) et de la ville dans laquelle il a construit son ranch et bâti sa vie : Amarillo.<\/p>

Slim a beau avoir 90 ans, il a toujours la forme : il monte à cheval, il chasse, pêche et joue toujours régulièrement au poker. Aux WSOP de cette année, il est arrivé 91ème de l'Event 42 consacré aux seniors. Bon, ce n'est pas la performance du siècle, et les 2.825$ de prix qu'il a ainsi remporté ne signifient sans doute pas grand chose pour cette légende du jeu. Au cours de sa carrière, il a en effet terminé dix fois ITM, a gagné quatre bracelets et a fini premier du main event en 1972. Amarillo Slim n'est pas n'importe qui, et c'est la raison pour laquelle il figure au Poker Hall of Fame depuis plus de quinze ans.<\/p>

Mais son (auto)biographie (écrite avec Greg Dinkin) n'est pas à proprement parler un livre sur le poker. Evidemment, on y parle aussi de poker et vous y trouverez d'ailleurs bon nombre d'anecdotes plus étonnantes les unes que les autres à ce sujet. Tous les personnages légendaires du circuit du poker y font à un moment ou à un autre leur apparition : Stun Ungar, Doyle Brunson, Johnny Moss, Benny Binion, ... car tous ont évidemment cotoyé de très près ce grand gars hors du commun au chapeau de cow-boy et aux bottes en serpent. <\/p>

Si Amarillo Slim a commencé sa carrière comme joueur de billard professionnel, il a vite dû trouver d'autres moyens de gagner sa vie. Il s'est rapidement découvert un talent pour les paris. Battre des champions de tennis, tirer une balle de golf à plus d'un kilomètre, jouer au bowling les yeux fermés ou faire entrer un dromadaire dans un casino : voici quelques-uns des moyens que Slim a utilisé pour soutirer des centaines de milliers de dollars aux plus grands parieurs de son époque. Il y avait à chaque fois une petite astuce qui mettait le défi apparemment impossible à la portée de Slim le rusé.<\/p>

Les explications de tous ces petits trucs qui transformèrent un joueur invétéré en gambler professionnel et richissime ne sont pas les seuls intérêtes de ce livre qui se lit d'une seule traite. L'existence d'Amarillo Slim vaut en effet le détour par elle-même. Ayant plusieurs fois frôlé la mort à cause d'animaux dangereux ou de paris pour le moins risqués, le joueur du Texas a croisé de nombreux personnages célèbres, depuis le roi du Maroc jusqu'à Pablo Escobar. Sa vie est un véritable roman, et c'est plus comme un incroyable livre d'aventures que comme une austère biographie que ce livre mérite sa place dans vos bibliothèques. « Amarillo Slim dans un monde plein de gens obèses », aux éditions Micro Application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
