Jared Tendler

Jared Tendler was already an accomplished mental coach for golf professionals when he ran into poker player and PokerStrategy.com coach Dusty 'leatherass9 Schmidt on the golf course. Schmidt and Tendler then started a working relationship and Schmidt attributes a good share of his success to the coaching that Tendler provided.

Made progress in his mental game: Phil Hellmuth

PokerStrategy.com: Imagine an amateur player gets his chance to play a big poker tournament. He's nervous. He fears to take his seat. What tools is he able to use to strengthen his mental game? Which ones are helpful three months before the tourney, which ones an hour before the tournament?

jaredtendler: If you only have an hour to prepare, the thing you need to focus on most is that nerves alone don't mean you'll play poorly. Being nervous can be fuel to perform at your highest level as long as you don't assume you’re going to do poorly just because you're nervous.

Stay focused on making the best decisions you possibly can, use a few deep breaths to slow your thinking, and embrace the excitement (not the fear) of the opportunity to win.

If you have three months to prepare, that's a ton of time to make major strides. The most important thing is to break down the underlying cause of your fear. The roots of fear need to be fixed, so you'll be even more prepared to use it as fuel rather than be paralyzed by it.

PokerStrategy.com: A famous example of tilt has always been Phil Hellmuth. How do you feel about his remarkable WSOP?

jaredtendler: I watched Phil up close at the WSOP this year and he has definitely made some progress in his mental game and tactically as a player. In my book, I described Entitlement Tilt as being "Classic Phil Hellmuth Tilt", but that may be the first part of my book to become outdated. If Phil keeps taking steps forward, I’ll definitely take that part out of a revised version.
