\nIn uno dei nostri recenti articoli abbiamo parlato del WSOP.
\nOggi lo vogliamo analizzare più a fondo. Le World Series of Poker<\/strong> (WSOP) sono
\nl'evento di poker sportivo più prestigioso del mondo. Vengono disputate ogni
\nanno a Las Vegas e dal 2007 anche in Europa, tra giugno e luglio. Giocatori di
\ntutto il mondo si sfidano in una serie di tornei comprendenti tutte le
\nspecialità del poker, con vari livelli di buy-in, variabili da 500 a<\/em> 50.000 dollari<\/em>. Il
\ntorneo più importante, che assegna convenzionalmente il titolo di campione del
\nmondo, è il Main Event, giocato nella specialità del poker Texas Hold'em nella
\nvariante senza limite. Al giocatore vincitore di ogni torneo viene assegnato,
\noltre ad un consistente premio in denaro, un prestigioso braccialetto d'oro. Al
\nprimo classificato del Main Event viene invece assegnato un braccialetto di
\nplatino.\n<\/p>

\"World<\/p>

\nNel 1968, Tom Morehead<\/strong>, proprietario del casinò Riverside a
\nReno (Nevada), organizzò un torneo ad inviti denominato World Series of Poker.
\nSebbene l'importanza di questo evento e dell'impegno di Morehead è considerato
\nfondamentale nella storia del poker e delle World Series of Poker,
\nconvenzionalmente l'inizio della storia del torneo viene fatto coincidere con
\nlo spostamento del torneo a Las Vegas, nel Nevada.\n<\/p>

\nLo svolgimento delle World Series of Poker a Las Vegas si
\ndeve alla famiglia Binion<\/strong> (il padre Benny ed i suoi figli Jack e Ted). Furono
\nloro ad introdurre per primi nel loro casinò i giochi di poker, grazie al
\nmiglioramento delle misure di sicurezza per prevenire i bari. Fu grazie
\nall’interessamento della famiglia Binion che il torneo di poker più importante
\ndel mondo venne spostato da Reno a Las Vegas dove, pur mantenendo la stessa
\ndenominazione, iniziò quell'evoluzione che lo ha fatto diventare un evento di
\nportata mondiale. Benny Binion è considerato un pioniere del \"Las Vegas
\nstyle\": fu infatti il primo a Las Vegas a posare la moquette sul pavimento
\ndel suo casinò, il primo ad utilizzare le limousine per accompagnare i clienti,
\nil primo ad offrire drink ai giocatori. La sua filosofia \"Good food, good
\nwhiskey, good gamble\" (\"Buon cibo, buon whisky, buone
\nscommesse\") fu il segreto del successo del suo casinò.<\/strong>\n<\/p>

\nLe prime
\nWorld Series of Poker si disputarono nel 1970 a Las Vegas
\n(Nevada), nel
\ncasinò Binion's Horseshoe. La prima edizione prevedeva cinque eventi: 5 card
\nstud, Deuce to seven low-ball draw, Razz, 7 Card Stud, e Texas Hold'em<\/em>. <\/span>Si
\ntrattava di un torneo ad inviti organizzato da Benny Binion, proprietario del
\nBinion's Horseshoe. La formula era molto particolare: i sette giocatori si
\nsarebbero dovuti sfidare con i propri soldi nelle varie specialità del poker,
\ned alla fine avrebbero votato il miglior giocatore del torneo. Le prime World
\nSeries of Poker furono vinte da John Moss, autentica leggenda del poker. Un suo
\navversario disse di lui:\n<\/p>

\n\t “Se non hai mai perso una partita da Johnny Moss, non
\n\thai giocato veramente a poker”.<\/em>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>

\nL'anno successivo la modalità di elezione. del campione del
\nmondo cambiò: il nuovo campione sarebbe stato il vincitore di un torneo
\n\"freezeout\", ossia colui il quale avrebbe collezionato tutte le chip
\ndegli avversari. Johnny Moss fu nuovamente incoronato Campione del Mondo. Ma fu
\nnel 1972, quando Thomas \"Amarillo Slim\" Preston<\/strong> vinse il titolo e
\npartecipò a vari talk-show, che le WSOP cominciarono ad avere una sempre più
\nvasta schiera di seguaci.\n<\/p>

\n\"\"Un anno più tardi Binion fu intervistato sulle WSOP,
\nnell'ambito dell'Oral History Project della Nevada-Reno University, da Mary
\nEllen Glass alla quale, parlando della crescente attenzione che questa competizione
\nstava riscuotendo, profetizzò una crescita esponenziale negli anni del numero
\ndei giocatori partecipanti: dai 7 del 1972, ai 13 del 1973 ai potenziali 20 del
\n1974, per arrivare, forse, a 50 giocatori negli anni a venire. All'inizio degli
\nanni '80 furono introdotti i tornei satellite per le WSOP che, con
\n\"buy-in\" modesti, diedero la possibilità a molte più persone di
\ninseguire proprio sogno di gloria; la profezia di Binion divenne così realtà.
\nMa neanche lo stesso Binion, che passò a miglior vita il giorno di Natale del
\n1989, potè prevedere l'enorme crescita che avrebbe avuto quella cosa che ebbe
\ninizio con l'esperienza del torneo annuale di poker dell'Horseshoe: le World
\nSeries of Poker.\n<\/p>

\nNel 1982, nove anni dopo l'intervista di Binion alla
\nNevada-Reno University, i partecipanti alle WSOP furono 52. Nel 1987 gli
\niscritti al torneo furono 2.141 e nel 2002 l'evento attirò ben 7.595 giocatori.<\/em> Il
\nmontepremi incrementò di conseguen za, dai 7.769.000$ degli anni '90, ai
\n19.599.230$ del 2002. Cos’è oggi lo sappiamo tutti…\n<\/p>

\nSe nel 1988 le WSOP constavano di soli 12 eventi, per lo più
\ndi Texas Hold'em e Seven Card Stud, nel 2004 il torneo ha offerto ben 33
\ncompetizioni che hanno coperto una larga varietà di giochi tra cui l'Omaha,
\nl'Omaha Hi-Lo, il Razz e il Deuce to seven. Nel 2006, i 12.000.000 vinti da
\nJamie Gold nel main event costituiscono il più alto premio in denaro di tutti i
\ntempi per un evento sportivo.<\/strong> Lo svolgimento delle World Series of Poker a Las
