Ce lo ricordiamo a sbraitare contro Andrew Robl<\/strong>, a litigare con Phil Hellmuth<\/strong>, a dire \"On your bike!<\/em>\" a tutti, a ciondolare un po' ubriaco per la sala urlando: \"I'm a genius!<\/em>\". Ce lo ricordiamo irriverente, cattivissimo, con le idee chiare, feroce <\/strong>al tavolo e magari anche nella vita. Ma Tony G<\/strong>, da oggi, è anche un europarlamentare<\/strong>!<\/p>

Il player lituano è stato artefice del boom del suo partito<\/strong>, il quale, passando dal 7,17%<\/strong> delle ultime consultazioni europee del 2009 <\/strong>(dove era risultato sesto), al 16,5%<\/strong> dello scorso 25 maggio (terzo), ha consentito alla lista guidata da Peter Auštrevičius<\/strong> di ottenere un secondo seggio in europarlamento, al pari dei primi due partiti. Tony G <\/strong>è risultato addirittura essere il più votato della sua lista e si è quindi aggiudicato di diritto l'occupazione di questa seconda poltrona<\/strong>.<\/p>

Antanas Gouga<\/strong>, a Bruxelles<\/strong>, si accomoderà nei banchi tra le fila del gruppo dell'ALDE<\/strong> (Alleanza dei Democratici e Liberali per l'Europa<\/strong>), e il mondo del poker sogna che la sua presenza possa rappresentare un elemento importante per portare avanti la propria causa<\/strong>, aiutarne la diffusione e soprattutto portare all'attenzione del mondo politico<\/strong> la comprensione del fenomeno e di ciò che rappresenta. La sfida maggiore<\/strong> sarà quella di mettere in evidenza ciò che il poker ha di diverso rispetto ad altri giochi da casinò, magari facendoci sognare l'unione pokeristica europea<\/strong>.<\/p>

Sicuramente Tony G<\/strong> è tra i migliori personaggi che potessero interpretare questo ruolo, infatti non è nuovo a fenomeni di \"propaganda<\/strong>\" pro-poker: fondatore di uno dei più noti portali di informazione sul poker nel 2002, si è prestato spesso al ruolo di \"testimonial<\/strong>\" per questo gioco. Un curioso aneddoto<\/strong> lo vede protagonista nel 2006, quando prende parte a un tour asiatico e nell'evento \"Bad Boys of poker II<\/strong>\" indossa un kimono <\/strong>per promuovere il poker in Giappone<\/strong>. Di tale evento risulta anche vincitore, battendo in heads up Mike \"mouth\" Mautsow<\/strong>. A testimonianza del suo impegno attivo nella promozione del poker, il 23 Febbraio 2010 <\/strong>ha fondato la Federazione Poker Lituano<\/strong>, con sede a Vilnius<\/strong>.<\/p>

Tantissime sono state le testimonianze di stima<\/strong> e di incoraggiamento per questa sua nuova avventura. La sua pagina facebook <\/strong>e il suo profilo su twitter <\/strong>sono stati tempestati di messaggi<\/strong> di stima da parte di suoi tifosi ed appassionati del poker, orgogliosi per questo suo prestigioso incarico.<\/p>

Anche se molti di noi lo conoscono soprattutto per i memorabili siparietti<\/strong> con Phil Hellmut<\/strong> oppure per le sue scenate contro le giocate degli avversari, non è di certo questo il motivo per cui è stato eletto. Tony G <\/strong>infatti, pur essendo cresciuto in Australia<\/strong>, è sempre rimasto legato alla sua terra natìa, dove è tornato e si è affermato come imprenditore. <\/p>

È stato anche il vicepresidente <\/strong>della Federazione di Basket lituana<\/strong>, e proprio per la causa del basket lituano, nel 2010 ha versato una buona parte dei €500.000 <\/strong>necessari a ottenere la \"wild-card<\/strong>\" per la partecipazione ai mondiali di basket in Turchia<\/strong>. Infatti la squadra lituana inizialmente non si era riuscita a qualificare alle fasi finali<\/strong> della competizione. Alla fine grazie a questo ingresso ha concluso la rassegna cestistica iridata al terzo posto conquistando la medaglia di bronzo<\/strong>. <\/p>

Il percorso della candidatura nasce però da lontano, e ha portato Tony G <\/strong>ad allontanarsi dal poker giocato nel marzo del 2013<\/strong>, quando aveva deciso di abbandonare il ruolo di testimonial per poi decidere di annunciare la sua candidatura politica<\/strong> nello scorso ottobre. Ma il legame con il mondo del poker<\/strong> è rimasto forte, e nel dicembre del 2013 ha lanciato la sua poker room. <\/span><\/p>

Il poker ha quindi un suo rappresentante istituzionale tra le fila del Parlamento Europeo<\/strong>, e la speranza di noi tutti è quella che sia abile a destreggiarsi tra i tavoli della politica allo stesso modo di quanto lo è stato tra quelli degli High Stakes<\/strong>.<\/p>
