Google Play store to allow real money gambling apps

You may soon be able to play poker on your Android devices following a U-turn on a long standing restriction on gambling apps.

Google Play Android

Poker could be coming to your Android smartphone as Google has confirmed it will allow real money gambling apps in the Google Play app store later this year.

Google has prohibited real money gambling on Android smartphones since 2013, allowing Apple to corner the mobile poker market.

Previously you could only gamble using an Android phone directly on an operator's website or with a third party app that had to be installed manually.

Emails have been sent to gambling operators in France, the UK and Ireland. The emails invited them to make a request for a license from August onwards in those jurisdictions, with other regions being potentially invited to do the same in the future.

Android is estimated by some experts to have as much as 88% of the market share of the entire smartphone market, so this could have a big impact on the mobile gambling and poker industry.
