US President Donald Trump this week fired the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, after he failed to resign upon request.
Bharara is better known among poker fans and players as the federal prosecutor responsible for Black Friday, when he shut down online poker in the US, following an indictment issued by the United States Department of Justice, led by him, against PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker.
It is believed that the attorney was among 46 prosecutors contacted just six days ago, on March 10th, when all were asked to offer their resignations as part of a Trump led revamp of America’s Justice Department.
Bharara, who met the then President-elect at Trump Tower back in November, claims he was asked at the time to stay on in his position and so disputed this new order. Following a period of miscommunication, Bharara announced on Saturday that he had been sacked from his position.
I did not resign. Moments ago I was fired. Being the US Attorney in SDNY will forever be the greatest honor of my professional life.— Preet Bharara (@PreetBharara) March 11, 2017
