Op 22 januari ging de L.A. Poker Classic van start.
\nNadat Scotty Nguyen het H.O.R.S.E-event wist te winnen, was het Vivek Rajkumar die het zojuist afgeronde Heads-up event op zijn naam schreef. Zijn overwinning was goed voor een prijzengeld van $350.000. In de heads-up versloeg hij Chris Moore, nadat zij grote namen als Michael Binger, John Phan, David Singer en
\nChris Ferguson achter zich wisten te houden.<\/p>

Gisteren begon het main event waarin Phil Ivey zijn titel mag verdedigen. De finale tafel van vorig jaar kende een bijzonder sterke bezetting. Naast Ivery zaten onder andere Phil Hellmuth, Nam Le en de toen nog onbekende  November Nine Scott Montgomerey. Ook dit jaar verschijnen weer de nodige pro's aan de start van het $10.000-Main Event.<\/p>

De pokerroom van het Commerce Casino, een van de grootste ter wereld, zal in ieder geval genoeg ruimte bieden voor alle spelers. Vorig jaar speelden 665 spelers in het main event, waarmee de totale prijzenpot opliep tot  $6.384.000.

\nEen grote opkomst zou in ieder geval een lichtpuntje zijn voor de WPT. De onlangs gepubliceerde vierde kwartaal cijfers waren, zoals verwacht, niet positief. In het vierde kwartaal mocht de WPT $2,6 Miljoen aan gelden innemen, dit is bijna 50% lager dan in hetzelfde kwartaal in 2007, toen het bedrijf nog $5,1 miljoen mocht inboeken. In totaal noteerde het bedrijf in 2008 een verlies van $12,5 miljoen.<\/p>

Ondanks deze cijfers ziet de top van het bedrijf de toekomst positief. Onder andere door het onlangs verlengde contract omtrent de televisie rechten van de WPT. Kabelzender Fox Sport heeft ook voor het achtste seizoen van de WPT, dat in mei van start zal gaan, de televisie rechten gekregen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
