Even with 22, your are a slight favourite against AK. With a probability of 12 percent, you will flop a set which usually means you can correctly play the hand without any problems until the end. Most of the time, you will be stuck with a weak made hand, though. In contrast to flopped pairs, a pocket pair only has two outs to improve. You will improve to a set by the river in only 9 percent of all cases. In that light, it's more convenient to flop a middle pair than being left with a pocket pair for second pair.
