Casino thieves steal empty ATM
We round up a few stories you may have missed this week, including an EPT champion calling time on his poker career.
Canada's dumbest criminals?
Two thieves managed to escape Calgary Casino with one of its ATM machines earlier this week, but forgot one golden rule in the criminal's code:
When a cash machine has a notice that reads "out of order" displayed on its screen, it probably doesn't have any money in it! (It didn't).
To add injury to insult, security cameras also caught some footage of the hilarious getaway, and at one stage the machine actually falls on top of one of the culprits, leaving him chewing on a mouthful of carpet.
Oh well, a valuable lesson learned - and they can't be that stupid because the police haven't caught them yet!
Ludovic Lacay quits poker
After nearly a decade travelling the world as a poker player, former Winamax.fr sponsored pro Ludovic Lacay has decided to call time on his career in the game.
The Frenchman revealed in a recent blog post that he'd been "losing motivation" over the course of the last few months, and that he'd decided that the time was right for him to "turn the page and move onto other things".
To date, Lacay has accumulated over $3m in live tournaments earnings, and is most famous for the EPT San Remo title he won back in October, 2012.
Don't play home games in Virginia
A group of high stakes poker players were left in a state of terror last November after a heavily armed SWAT team raided their private home game in Virginia.
There were no shots fired and no one was injured, but after the ordeal one player stated that he "couldn't believe what had happened" and that police "could've achieved the same result by sending a retired detective with a clipboard".
The host of the game - who hasn't been named, but is rumoured to be a "recognised pro" - had a total of $150,000 seized on the scene, and had to forfeit 40% of that to avoid the "Class 3 misdemeanor of illegal gambling" leaving a mark on his record.
Virginia state police has the right to keep 100% of the funds it seizes from such illegal home games, and back in 2006 a man was actually shot and killed after a SWAT team was called in to arrest him for illegally betting on sports.
