The decisive moment came close to the money. With nine players remaining and only seven getting paid, Kim sat second in chips with around 680,000. After a short stack shoved from middle position, Kim called on the button with pocket aces.

The tournament chip leader, sitting directly behind him, then moved all in for roughly 700,000. Kim made the call and found himself in excellent shape against pocket sixes.

The aces held, pushing his stack to around 1.5 million and transforming his position in the tournament. By the time the final seven were reached, Kim had moved into the chip lead and was no longer thinking simply about securing a payout.

The $0.80 Route Into a $2,650 Tournament

What makes the victory remarkable is how Kim reached the event in the first place. His journey began inside the Venom Vault, where he received a $0.80 Survivor Flip Step ticket. Instead of ending there, he continued winning through the Survivor Flip ladder until the original reward became a $2,650 Mini Phil’s Thrill entry. That meant a ticket worth less than one dollar had effectively opened the door to a tournament with a $152,500 prize pool.

Kim was sharing the tournament with familiar names including Chris Moneymaker, Alex Foxen and Kristen Foxen, but the rising payouts quickly became the bigger source of pressure. His previous best online result was only around $1,400, making every pay jump significantly more meaningful than anything he had experienced before.

Once the tournament reached three-handed play, Kim said the tension began to disappear and he was finally able to enjoy the run. He eventually finished the job, collecting $42,700 for first place.

A Poker Score That Matters Away From the Tables

The money arrived at an especially important time for Kim. He said his car had recently been repossessed and he had moved in with a family member. Rather than immediately chasing another high-stakes tournament, his priorities are far more practical: getting transportation again, finding his own home and taking care of his three dogs.

That gives the story a very different ending from the usual poker heater. A $0.80 promotional ticket did not simply become a $42,700 tournament win. It became a potentially life-changing score.
