Hello,
My name is Daniel Kardefelt Winther, I am a PhD student at the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics.
In much of the media coverage today, online based hobbies such as poker, gaming or gambling receives a lot of negative attention. It is claimed to be harmful, a waste of time or "addictive".
My PhD project aims to criticise these arguments which are often founded on poor research using unsuitable methods. Furthermore, such research is often done by people who are not gamers or gamblers and therefore do not have a good grasp of the topic. The overall aim of my PhD is to give more legitimacy to online-based activities as a regular hobby.
This survey is the main data collection for my PhD. It will ask questions about your online poker playing, your thoughts and feelings about playing and not playing, some questions about possible negative or positive outcomes of your playing and also some questions about you. For those of you who are Facebook users there will be an opportunity to answer questions about this platform as well should you wish to do so.
The survey can be found here, and is expected to take about 10-15 minutes:
