PartyGaming - $0.25 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 5 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3

BB: $40.53
Hero (UTG): $35.56
CO: $23.55
BTN: $13.29
SB: $46.55

SB posts SB $0.10, BB posts BB $0.25

Pre Flop: ($0.35) Hero has A♦ K♥

Hero raises to $0.75, fold, BTN raises to $13.29 and is all-in, fold, fold, Hero calls $12.54

no reads (except for this donkey move :) )

Is it just a matter of choosing high vs low variance? or is it a blunder to call?

Snap call imo. Unknown half-stacked fish will surprise you here with a lot of weaker hands and you're clearly ahead.

JJ+ AK would be my calling range in this spot as we still are from UTG we got to give some credit.

Hey,

I would break my mouse snap calling here :)

It seems illogical for him to shove kk/aa because, well why would you want to lose the value? But I assume he did shove right?

If he is going to spew and he definitely can have a lot of spew, then its likely that he has Kx or Ax hands in his range that we really dominate.

Games are good!
