There are few topics in poker discussions that rise over and over again. Most common ones are rigged sites, misunderstanding the idea of EV-line, and misunderstanding how skill, luck, EV, long run etc. affects this whole thing. One example of the last one is this interesting thread: 'variance evens out in long run' partly false?
In my mind, this game isn't that complicated. Most of the problems come when players think that they are entitled to win, or they deserve to win as they are better players than the rest. They forget that the game dynamics are based on luck, and we can't really control our luck. It's hard to accept the fact that my EV might be positive, but I keep losing my whole lifetime. Instead we just look at all the pros and people whom have made money in poker and think "I can be like that". We think that in this game you WILL make money if you are a good player. But instead we should think that you WILL PROPABLY make money if you are a good player.
The thread I linked is actually somewhat interesting discussion. But when I see discussions about rigged sites or how "EV-line is wrong" it just tilts me. I have been an active member of poker forums since 2006, and I have seen those discussion over and over again. I am amazed how those same 2 things can come up again and again and again and again.
If Poker Tracker and HEM would have just changed the stat and line to "equity adjusted winnings" we might have had a lot less of those discussions. And to that rigged thing...
Well think it this way: there are thousands of geeks around the world with their tin foil hats that are just trying to find proof that we are scammed. And as we have poker trackers and sites that show billions of hands, there would be a proof if those rng's are favored to some direction.
Of course it is possible that sites could rig their rng's in a way that it wouldn't show in large samples, but why would they do that? After all, running a poker site is a money making machine. As long as the games are running, there are no real threats. The only threat is that someone forces the site to close down. And usually the only reason for that is if they are breaking the rules (like Black Friday). So why would they risk their business with rigged rng, as it's a huge risk with little rewards.
The only reason I can think of is if they want to balance out the poker ecologics. Sort of what Party is now doing as they are afraid that good players will scare the recreational players away. And those recreational players are the ones that bring the money to the games. But if site starts decides to rig their rng to favor the bad players, it wouldn't take long before it would show in reg's database. And I am sure that if few regs will see that fishes suckout them a lot, there would be some big database investigations which might lead to even bigger investigations. As every hand is tracked to some database, the risk in rigging the rng is quite risky.
So instead of just accepting the luck factor and variance, and the fact that better player doesn't always win, it's easier to blame rigged rng.
