Really slow and not many fish so switched to $10NL SH to get some post flop experience... right off the bat at one table ran into a TPA player but didn't have reads at the time. I was raised from the CO on the button and had AKs - I lost to KQo as the flop came KQx.

This hand turned out a little better - again no reads on the player, but had a feeling that they were aggressive - like 90% of the players I ran into postflop this session.

$0.05/$0.1 No Limit Holdem
6 players

Stacks:
UTG Petrobas ($9.50)
UTG+1 Suriprof ($19.70)
CO Hero ($9.85)
BTN nookie_ua ($13.90)
SB Coosia ($23.70)
BB sanleonardo ($17.45)

Pre-flop: ($0.15, 6 players) Hero is CO A♦ 8♦
2 folds, Hero raises to $0.40, 2 folds, sanleonardo raises to $1.30, Hero calls $0.90

I decide to see the flop and fold if nothing hits.

Flop: A♣ 6♥ 7♠ ($2.65, 2 players)
sanleonardo bets $1.30, Hero raises to $3.90, sanleonardo goes all-in $16.15, Hero calls $4.65

the bet right out seemed suspicious - I decide to reraise and he puts me all in - I'm committed to the pot by my raise. I had an idea (and a prayer) he was pushing with a high pair but not an A or AA.

Turn: 4♠ ($27.35, 2 players)

River: T♠ ($27.35, 2 players)

Final Pot: $19.75

Hero shows: A♦ 8♦
sanleonardo shows: K♠ K♣

Hero wins $17.80 ( won +$7.95 )
sanleonardo wins $7.60 ( lost -$9.85 )

Again I get reraised this time Villian is 29.64/7.69/11/33 VPIP/PFR/AF/WTS (39 hands)

Stacks:
UTG cattack ($11.45)

CO thomastsr ($9.70)
BTN borjanych ($18.60)
SB Hero ($10.80)
BB DntWryBeHpy ($10.75)

Pre-flop: ($0.15, 6 players) Hero is SB A♠ K♥
1 fold, johno12345 raises to $0.30, 2 folds, Hero raises to $0.90, 1 fold, johno12345 raises to $1.50, Hero calls $0.60

Flop: 9♥ 6♣ 4♠ ($3.10, 2 players)
Hero bets $1.50, johno12345 raises to $3, Hero calls $1.50

I make a blocking bet and get miniraised. The pot is $7.60 and I need to call only $1.50 odds of 5:1- Had I been in Villain's seat I'd have to make a bigger raise than that making the odds more like 2:1 a 2/3 pot bet. Either he's raising for value, on a draw or has an underpair - I tend to think the miniraise is either a made hand a draw or a scared pair

Turn: K♠ ($9.10, 2 players)
Hero goes all-in $6.30, johno12345 calls $4.85

I have to push here. I'm committed and my K has shown up. I'll either get the pot now or I'm probably ahead if he calls

River: A♣ ($20.25, 2 players)

Final Pot: $18.80
Hero shows: A♠ K♥
johno12345 shows: Q♠ Q♦

Hero wins $18.40 ( won +$7.60 )
johno12345 lost -$9.35

Started out with some really bad luck that turned into a downswing of almost 8 buy-ins. After my aces were cracked by K's J's and then J's again (I think all at one table!) I tripled up with AA on the table right beside it.

Then every time I'd lose a pot - I'd win one on another table. You can see how my first week is going so far with the SSS on the graph below. This latest session of 650 hands was up 11BB/100hands even after being cracked 3 times with AA.

I managed to turn what started out to be a horrible start into my biggest session yet.

Keys include:

1) not completing unless there are limpers
2) not raising KQ if there are limpers
3) more careful with small pairs
4) lay off AQ and TT UTG - fold AQ to a big reraise from a tight player
5) colour code everyone I can - keep an eye out for tight players to see whether they are aggressive or not.
6) be more aggressive with betting out against aggressive players and more passive against weaker ones.
7) don't mind getting sucked out 2 times in a row with AA and then KK on one table.. the next table might triple up.

When I lost twice with AA, then KK on that table I didn't leave - I knew there was action and that things would even out. After all, up to this point I was 100% with rockets and had to suffer some bad beats sometime. At least I lost to KK, JJ and JJ and not ATs..

The very next hand I pick up 66 on the button - I'm not steaming nearly as much as I thought I would, and taking it ok:

$0.1/$0.25 No Limit Holdem

BTN Hero ($5.00)
SB pokerjunky22 ($9.30)
BB vincentvt11 ($27.40)

Hero says "just brutal", 2 folds, gkraz calls $0.25, 2 folds, Hero calls $0.25, Chriscabron2 says "this is a really bad nite 4 u man", pokerjunky22 calls $0.15, vincentvt11 checks

Flop: 8♠ 3♦ 6♠ ($1, 4 players)
pokerjunky22 checks, vincentvt11 checks, gkraz checks, Hero bets $0.50, pokerjunky22 calls $0.50, vincentvt11 folds, gkraz calls $0.50

Turn: Q♣ ($2.50, 3 players)
pokerjunky22 bets $2.50, 1 fold, Hero goes all-in $4.25, pokerjunky22 calls $1.75

River: 4♥ ($11, 2 players)

Final Pot: $11

Hero wins $10.45 ( won +$5.45 )
gkraz lost -$0.75
pokerjunky22 lost -$5.00
vincentvt11 lost -$0.25

My best stretch was the last 460 hands where I climbed up 120BB - a bit of a tear. My goal is to try and sustain concentration on tables and keep taking advantage of reads, and very few chances. Try not betting out into tight passive players when I can help it.

The following hand - I've got KK and decide to slowplay the flop into 4 players to induce a bet while the board isn't dangerous.. .nothing the first round - second round I get my chance.

$0.1/$0.25 No Limit Holdem

Stacks:

Pre-flop: ($0.35, 7 players) Hero is UTG+1 K♦ K♥
1 fold, Hero raises to $1, Benson2k calls $1, 2 folds, Barhoot calls $0.90, Irishwraith calls $0.75

Flop: 3♦ K♠ 2♣ ($4, 4 players)
Barhoot checks, Irishwraith checks, Hero checks, Benson2k checks

Turn: T♣ ($4, 4 players)
Barhoot bets $2.75, 1 fold, Hero goes all-in $4.90, 1 fold, Barhoot calls $2.15

River: 5♠ ($13.80, 2 players)

Final Pot: $13.80
Barhoot shows: 9♥ 9♠
Hero shows: K♦ K♥

Hero wins $13.15 ( won +$7.25 )
Barhoot lost -$5.90
Irishwraith lost -$1.00

The last 1000 or so hands at SSS have turned from disaster to a definite upswing. Including the downswing of AA cracked twice etc.. I'd say not a bad rate. I still made a few mistakes - pushing TT with a K on the flop - oops!

I wanted to make up for donking those 10's - I think I did on this hand:

$0.1/$0.25 No Limit Holdem

I've been trying out the SH $10NL tables when the $25 SSS full tables become too tight and all I can make money on is stealing blinds from other short stacks and tight players .. still every blind counts! My progress at the SH tables is shown below.. The coachings and videos are great help.

I hope I can sustain this winrate - or close to it. My goal is to move up a limit and play SSS at the $50 tables, and SH at the $25 tables.

The following hand was interesting - I used a blockbet and called to find a really nice turn card. Maybe I was lucky or bad - I'm going to submit it to the examples for help.

You play SSS on Shorthanded tables? Please don't do that again 0o or am I reading it wrong.

You posted the same hand twice you might want to edit that ;)
keep up the good work mate

Oh no, Gerv - I'd get blinded away on SH with the SSS. I go according to the SHC in the shorthanded section.

Thanks - I've made the edit.

Here's an update of my combined SSS at NL25 and SH at NL10 results. There's a fair amount of ugly stuff at about 3500 hands where I had a downswing and also started playing SH - it took a few rounds to get used to for sure.

In the last 1k hands, I'm winning at about twice the rate of the previous 4k - maybe an upswing - but I really haven't had many good cards or situations lately either. I'll need many more hands to know. One thing for sure - that using PokerStrategy.com has definitely improved my game significantly.

In tourneys I'm up around 8 buyins (24$) but the variance in SNG's is a lot, and there's too many suckouts and all in's in the turbo one tables for me. I prefer tournament structures where there are many payouts - 100 to 500 people but they take hours.

I'm moving up faster with the SH and SSS alternating than I think I would with SNG's. I'm going to stick to cash and enter the odd big tourney for fun.

Hey bckdrflush it looks like you are doing great! Very nice to see!!

I can really recommend posting hands in the designated forum for evaluation, and just keep posting those thoughts with em too!

Remember to not play too loose, as I see some moves which could really turn out ugly. Hope to see ya tonight and we can maybe have a chat about it in more detail ;)

BTW: do you have any learninggoals set up for yourself?

Keep up the good work,

Kind regards,
Leo

Thanks Leo, I made the session, but couldn't stay awake, not your fault at all :)
I'm posting some more hands as they come - lately playing a bit of SH NL10, but leaving the tables as soon as I'm up over 50%.. kind of like short stack. My SSS game is still going good - weekends are good because of all the fish, but frustrating because of some of the calls.

I try to read or reread an article related to which game I'm about to play, and also catch a video as often as possible - sometimes twice. I'm hoping to build enough bankroll to put some more down on pokerstars so I can make the gold status - If my full tilt was linked - my 20$ to 150$ run would make me gold by now I think.

Here's a crazy NL10 SH hand. The calls were very loose all over the place making it dangerous even to play KK. I tend to slowplay big hands a bit too much - trying to check raise, but usually it ends up in disaster. Check this hand out.

SB Llau-Mmm ($15.50)
BB cattack ($13.45)

Pre-flop: ($0.15, 6 players) Hero is UTG+1 K♠ K♦
w5pietro1 calls $0.10, Hero raises to $0.50, 1 fold, uppisen99 calls $0.50, 2 folds, w5pietro1 calls $0.40

the table is very fishy, friday night drunk even as you can see by the stats. Happy to get 2 calls with KK

Flop: K♥ A♦ 4♠ ($1.65, 3 players)
w5pietro1 checks, Hero checks, uppisen99 checks

fantastic - I have trips and there's an A on the board maybe someone donked with Ax and even has two pair? No one bets -I'm wondering how to make some money on this hand

Turn: T♣ ($1.65, 3 players)
w5pietro1 checks, Hero bets $1, uppisen99 raises to $2.20, w5pietro1 folds, Hero goes all-in $11.95, uppisen99 calls $9.75

likely the reraiser thinks I'm bluffing that the T♣ helped my hand and is trying to push me off - though he's very fishy - but then I'm thinking only about my hand and counting his stack. I go all in thinking he's trying to scare me off a bluff or a weaker hand

River: K♣ ($25.55, 2 players)

Final Pot: $25.55
Hero shows: K♠ K♦
uppisen99 shows: J♣ Q♦

Hero wins $23.55 ( won +$11.10 )
w5pietro1 lost -$0.50
uppisen99 lost -$12.45

All i can say is what a lucky river! I usually lose because of river card

Had a few more tries at SH NL10 - I prefer SH than FR due to the chance to play many more hands, get post flop experience and work on stealing and fighting steals. It's also easier for me to get a handle on my opponents on 6 handed tables - especially if I'm donig 2 or 3 at a time.

The swings here are higher, but with my increased stack I'm not unduly afraid to go all in, or even fire a third barrel when necessary. Of course I've also managed to tighten up on the flop and not bet out when I think I'm beat. Judging the texture of the flop against the tendencies of the opponent has already saved me a fair amount.

I got the HUD working for poker tracker - took a bit to set up but I've got several stats showing including fold to blinds, attempts to steal and fold to Cbet and the usuals. I think I've surprised some TAGs and LAGs with strong play, and sucked money out of LPA's by measured bets into them with the nuts. M y first hand this session - I called a steal raise and hit 2pair on the flop - my opponent hit trips and slow played. I should be more careful when I first sit down - I notice I more pots very early in sessions. Besides being sucked out all in KK to QQ it was a very good session.

And my stats for these two sessions:

Some aggressive play pays off against the TAG

Update - have attended several coaching sessions and reviewed a lot of hands. this is starting to pay off - and I've changed a few aspects of my post flop play. I've played a few more SNG's now that I'm over the avalanche of bad beats in 5 consecutive losses. I've cashed in 2 of my last 3 tourneys and again only got knoced out of the 3rd with AK on the button.. more on that later.

This hand was limped in on by someone that had been in over 75% of hands so far. I think it was his 4th or 5th consecutive limp or open raise.

No Limit Holdem Tournament

Pre-flop: (120, 8 players) Hero is BTN J♥ A♦
3 folds, djotlo78 calls 80, 1 fold, Hero raises to 320, 2 folds, djotlo78 calls 240

I'm kinda hoping to isolate and then cbet him off the pot. His MO so far is limp and hope to catch and fold, or raise and cbet - this time he limped and I have my first decent hand of the tourney in position. I might fold here in other circumstances

Flop: 8♠ 8♥ 6♣ (760, 2 players)
djotlo78 bets 250, Hero calls 250

He bets only 1/3 of the pot after limp/calling preflop. I'm willing to take the chance he's not on a high pair and has overcards or even trash. Instead of raising I decide to just float it like I'm getting free cash and take it away on the turn. My line is call/bet/fold

Turn: J♦ (1260, 2 players)
djotlo78 bets 250, Hero goes all-in 1170, djotlo78 folds

not his usual cbet pattern - either a monster or a desperate attempt to win the pot with a small bet - representing the monster. I don't buy it.

Final Pot: 1760

Hero wins 2680 ( won +940 )
djotlo78 lost -820

Here's the AK debacle. It was late in the tourney and I am raised by someone who I think is stealing again.. stats on ATS were high. I might have been better off to fold AK here?

Been running about even for the last 2k hands of SSS. SNG's are going pretty good - though I'm about even with the rake overall. I placed again in an MTT, but wasn't much, maybe 2$ for a couple of hours.

My SH game took a big down over the weekend with a lot of bad suckouts. It just got worse, starting with a few hundred hands of SSS.. and then switching to SH after this happened:

Mr666theDevil checks, Hero bets $0.60, Mr666theDevil raises to $1.20, Hero goes all-in $21.45, Mr666theDevil calls $8.90

I massively overbet but he only has 9$ left and my reraise would be almost half his stack. I don't like the flush possibilities and haven't had much luck with AA lately. Hopefully just take down the pot from the aggro player now

Turn: 7♦ ($32.45, 2 players)

River: 2♥ ($32.45, 2 players)

Final Pot: $21.10

Hero shows: A♥ A♦

Mr666theDevil wins $19.10 ( won +$8.60 )
Hero wins $11.35 ( lost -$10.50 )

Ok - it's the weekend, I guess my overbet might have looked like a big bluff.. actually I didn't really mind the call, usually I'd win that one.

We both lose 1$ to the massive rake at this limit. I'm demoralized but still keep trying. I've got a few buyins with SNG's left but not enough to get back. I'm down to about 25$ - even with winning some SNG's it was a tough road down. Those FPP's look kinda good about now.

I sign up to Titan Poker through PS.com, but I'm not sure if I'll get another 50$ startup capital. I don't know if pokertracker supports Titan - Ideally I'd like to get my full tilt account linked and make a deposit. Pokerstars also has a reload but I don't think it's hooked up through PS.com yet?

Hi Leo,

I'm doing well thanks - I stopped playing SSS, mainly because SnG's are more enjoyable, and less stressful for me than SSS. I deposited in Pokerstars - which isn't tracked - mainly for the bonus, and I like the site more than PartyPoker.

I've got another blog thread going, for SnG's - so far so good, please take a look.

Thanks again for checking in, you're a great coach :-)
